He (the deceptive leader) sacrifices something, that the enemy may snatch at it.
Feign weakness, set your trap, and reel your opponent in.
By holding out baits, he keeps him on the march; then with a body of picked men he lies in wait for him.
The opponent will soon bear first hand witness to the actual strength that was hiding behind the veil of weakness.
The clever combatant looks to the effect of combined energy, and does not require too much from individuals.
What happens in a particular hand is of little concern to you so long as your actions in the hand have contributed to the overall picture you have intended to paint for your opponents.
Hence his ability to pick out the right men and utilize combined energy.
However, every move you make must be purposeful and bring you closer to painting that intended picture in the minds of your opponents. The loss of even significant pots will pay off later on!
When he utilizes combined energy, his fighting men become as it were like unto rolling logs or stones. For it is the nature of a log or stone to remain motionless on level ground, and to move when on a slope; if four-cornered, to come to a standstill, but if round-shaped, to go rolling down.
In many cases, you will be able to control the flow of play in a game through aggression. When this is not possible you must know when to lay back and wait for the right time to become active again. As a log simply "goes with the flow" of the terrain it is positioned upon, so too must we dynamically adjust our playing styles according to the conditions of the tournament. The ability to ebb and flow is key; ride the waves when the waves are there and create your own waves when there are none!
Thus the energy developed by good fighting men is as the momentum of a round stone rolled down a mountain thousands of feet in height. So much on the subject of energy.
The decisions you make throughout a tournament will have painted a picture for your opponents of your playing style. Now you must decide how and when to properly use this intended perception against your opponents. When done properly, your play will persist with a force that your opponents can not withstand. You will confuse, bewilder, and ultimately dominate your opponents. You will be seen as unstoppable and indeed you will be!
