Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about thin value bets, especially on the river. Spots where you probably have the best hand—but it’s close.
Sometimes I check back to avoid getting raised, but I feel like I might be missing value in the long run. Other times I go for it and get called by worse, which feels great—but also occasionally run into better hands.
Finding the balance is tricky. Against weaker players, thin value seems profitable, but against strong opponents, it feels more dangerous.
How do you approach thin value spots? Do you go for it often, or play it safe?

Thin value bets are one of those spots where good players quietly print money, but only if they’re willing to live with a bit of discomfort.
I tend to lean toward taking them, because checking back too often is basically giving up equity you’ve already earned through earlier streets.
The key is recognizing that a thin value bet isn’t about feeling safe—it’s about whether your opponent can realistically call with worse often enough to justify it.
Against weaker or passive players, that threshold is surprisingly low, so betting becomes almost automatic.
Against strong, aggressive opponents, I tighten up a bit, but I still don’t let the fear of a raise paralyze me; most players don’t bluff‑raise rivers nearly as often as we imagine.
The real trick is building ranges that expect to value‑bet thinly so you’re not improvising under pressure.
When you get called by worse, it feels great, but even when you run into better, that’s just the cost of doing business in spots where long‑term EV matters more than short‑term comfort.
