I found ICM really interesting because it explains why tournament chips don’t always have the same value in terms of real money. Before learning about ICM, I think it would be easy to assume that gaining 1,000 chips and losing 1,000 chips have exactly the same impact throughout a tournament.
The connection between ICM and the bubble also makes a lot of sense to me. As players get closer to a significant payout, protecting your tournament life can sometimes be more important than accumulating chips.
I also liked how this connects with the previous lessons about pre-flop ranges and shoving. A hand that might be a profitable shove in the early stages of a tournament could potentially be too risky near the bubble because the value of surviving changes the decision.
My question is: when playing online tournaments, how do experienced players apply ICM quickly at the table without having to calculate everything manually? Is it mostly something you learn through experience, or do players commonly use calculators and charts while studying away from the table?
