I’m still learning poker, so I’m curious about what actually makes someone a good player. Is it knowing the strategy, being good at reading people, controlling emotions, or simply having a lot of experience?

And when someone wins consistently, how do you know it’s skill and not just a really long lucky streak?

For me, a good poker player isn’t the one who wins every session. It’s someone who makes good decisions when things go badly, controls their emotions, and keeps learning from their mistakes. ♠️

I agree, and patience is key.

To me, it’s the player who makes decisions with a clear understanding of what they are doing; they won’t always get it right—in fact, they’ll often get it wrong—but they aren't a player who relies on chance or makes a move without being able to explain why. Most importantly, it’s the player who recognizes their own flaws and limitations and constantly strives to improve.

To know his capabilities, what stakes he should play , to know how skillful he is , never underestimate opponents and especially the rng ))))

a good run , 1 good session and you are a good player thats it... its like everybody or anybody can do it or get there .
1 good tournament or luck and you are millionaire .

Long term. The following: bankroll management, mental toughness/tilt control, discipline, patience and game selection. If you're not at least decent to good at those things it doesn't matter how much poker knowledge or strategy you have or know you'll just tilt and throw everything you win.

85%-90% of poker players are losing players long term because they're not good at any of the things I listed. One has to work just as hard if not harder on that list and better them shelves personally in those areas then they need to study poker.

If I was just getting into poker I'd start here on those things....https://www.amazon.ca/Mental-Game-Poker-Strategies-Confidence/dp/0615436137 . There's a 2nd edition of that book.

Cheers!!!

The best poker player is the one who wins the most money over a long term. The only way to separate the luck from the skill when looking at results is volume. A strong win rate over a short term could be skill or luck, but a strong win rate over a long term, that's skill.

I agree. I think the really interesting question is how you can tell whether someone is actually making better decisions or just running well. Maybe the best players aren’t the ones with the biggest wins, but the ones whose decisions still make sense even when the results don’t go their way.

First of all playing 72 like you have a
pocket ace. The ability to fold without letting your ego get the better of you

When we see the big stack limp-calling at high frequency, limping the SB when folded to refusing to bully ... or the opposite being splashy and showing down with 33 or J4s we know that this is a total fish having a lucky day.

Some times we think the most lucrative player is who do a hero call or any thing like that. But the really good player is who has a good mind set and respect the variance

A good poker player is one who respects ranges, has a strategy, and understands ICM and GTO and Maje Always thé goog dicisions... Then there's the excellent player, who plays the same way even during bad runs
