When people talk about expensive poker mistakes, they usually mention bad calls or bad bluffs.

I think there's a habit that's even more costly:

Not taking 10 seconds before clicking.

I've noticed that many mistakes happen because we play on autopilot.

Instead of asking:

What range does my opponent represent?
What worse hands call me?
What better hands fold?

...we simply react.

That extra 10-second pause costs nothing.

Yet over hundreds of tournaments, it might save more chips than learning an advanced strategy.

I don't think poker is only about making great decisions.

It's also about giving yourself enough time to make them.

If you could eliminate just ONE bad habit from your game forever, what would it be?

Open limping, fighting against math is not a fight you can win over the long term.

It sets you up to play a garbage hand, out of position, with no initiative, basically making it impossible to be a long term winner.

I agree that open limping is generally a losing strategy in most situations. My point wasn't to defend limping, but to highlight how often we make decisions on autopilot instead of stopping to think. Even when the correct play is obvious, taking a few seconds to ask why we're making it has helped improve my game.

The most expensive habit in poker that costs $0 is probably playing emotionally. Tilt doesn’t require you to spend anything upfront, but it can quietly cost you entire buy-ins, sessions, and even your confidence.

A lot of players think the biggest leaks are things like bad bankroll management or poor strategy, but small mental mistakes add up fast: chasing losses, trying to “get even,” making hero calls because of ego, or changing your style after a bad beat. None of those habits cost money by themselves, but they create situations where you give money away.

The funny thing is that the fix is also free: patience, discipline, and being able to walk away when you’re not playing your A-game. In poker, the cheapest mistake to make is a bad beat. The expensive one is letting that bad beat change how you play.

Spot on post. The one habit I’d erase forever is paying off river bets when I already know I’m beat. That "curiosity call" usually happens instantly on autopilot. Taking those extra 10 seconds to ask "what worse hand is actually value-betting here?" would save me so many buy-ins.

I’d say the most expensive habit in poker that costs $0 is tilt. You don’t pay anything upfront for it, but the moment you let emotions drive your decisions, it drains your bankroll faster than any rake or bad beat ever could. Tilt makes players chase losses, shove recklessly, call when they know they’re beat, and abandon solid strategy all without realizing how much it’s costing them.
