One piece of advice I hear constantly is "Just study GTO." While game theory is obviously important, many players seem to forget that real opponents make mistakes all the time.

What's the most overrated poker advice you've ever received, and why do you think people keep repeating it?

Study poker because it makes all the difference, and of course, practice a lot to gain more experience.

"Just be patient and wait for good cards."

Patience is important, but passivity is expensive.
The best players know when to wait and when to be assertive.

For me, it’s "never limp". I understand why it’s good advice in many situations, but poker is too situational for absolute rules. It's a useful tip to stop passive play, but that doesn't mean it's the optimal strategy every time. Once you start thinking about position, stack depth, and opponent tendencies, there are spots where limping can be the highest EV option, especially in a softer environment.

"AK is a drawing hand". Mostly repeated by old live poker players, who have learned very little, even though they have played for decades :)

I think, but nowadays, some professional players have a limp range in their game. I vote in that option as a most overrated.

What's the Most Overrated Poker Advice?

Never limp
and/or Always raise if you enter the pot - this advice is the most overrated one as it ignores context and there are lots of situations/games where limping and/or over-limping can be a good strategy... for example: we raise preflop to thin the field, gain info, seize initiative... but if we're in games we can't achieve that - limping or folding can be better...

After playing for 10+ years, both live and online, I've learned to focus more on a better mindset instead of a specific strategy/style of play - IMO the good players are able to do exploitative adjustments... some things, like never limp are OK for newbies to build aggression/healthy habits in poker, but don't limit your game as it will make it easier for your opponents to figure you out!

Gotta defend the big blind.

No you don't.

Certainly there are situations when defending the big blind is the best play. You do get better pot odds to call with 1bb already in the pot. But remember that the BB is out of position. If we defend the big blind wide, we will see too many flops out of position with the worst hand. We are now forced to hit the flop or we have to check-fold (or bluff out of position - not fun).

For many inexperienced players the biggest error is just seeing way too many flops too wide and this advice of 'gotta defend the big blind' really just green lights them to keep playing badly and see too many flops. It becomes a folly mantra for weak play. The big blind is an early position seat and our range from early position should be TIGHT. When we defend wide out of position we are out of range. We can 'mix in' these hands but we do not want this to be a staple of our game, especially at low stakes and recreational poker where we want to be tight and aggressive and abuse position to exploit population.

When you have less than 10 blinds, you should go all in... but not always...
