I think taking a break depends a lot on how I’m playing and how I’m feeling. I play both tournaments and cash games, and I can play for several hours when I’m focused and enjoying the game. But if I start getting frustrated after losing a big hand, making decisions without thinking, or playing
hands just because I’m bored, I know it’s time to step away. With cash games, I think taking a break can be even more important because you can keep buying in and trying to recover what you lost. That can easily lead to making worse decisions. In tournaments, you can’t really chase your losses in the same way, but frustration can still affect your decisions and make you play hands you normally wouldn’t. I don’t usually feel the need to stop playing for several days. Most of the time, a few hours away from poker is enough to clear my head and come back with a better mindset. If I have a really bad session or feel like I’m forcing myself to play, then I’d rather take the next day off. I think the important thing is knowing when you’re no longer playing your normal game. Once emotions start making your decisions for you, it’s probably better to take a break. There’s always another tournament or another cash game waiting, so there’s no reason to keep playing when your mind isn’t in the game.
