We've all been through that.

You hit a strong hand on the flop — maybe a higher pair, two pairs, or even better — but something just doesn't feel right.

Your opponent keeps betting, and that little voice in your head starts to say:

“I think I'm defeated...”

The problem is... giving up a strong hand is one of the hardest things to do in poker.

I've made several calls crying, knowing that I was probably going to miss it, simply because I couldn't let go of my hand.

So I'm curious...

  • What was the hardest hand you've ever given up?
  • Do you trust your readings enough to make big folds?
  • Or do you usually pay in cash just to guarantee it?
I look forward to your comments! ♠️

This can be quite challenging, especially if you're new to poker and getting a strong hand preflop still feels like a huge stroke of luck, and even just seeing a strong hand makes you anticipate a potential win. This is especially true when your game is slow and you haven't had a playable hand in a while.Your opponent's playing style and strategy at the table are the second most important factor when making a decision. You must constantly analyze your opponents' play at the table and know what to expect from them. Otherwise, you'll be left guessing.

It is hard but I will fold if my gut feeling tells me to do so.

Getting away from cooler situations is one of the most difficult situations in poker. But with that being said, I will also say, that there is a thin line between trusting your reads and making good folds, and suffering from monsters under the bed syndrom, where you fold the best hand to often, because you mistakenly thing, your opponent always has the nuts. Sometimes in poker you just have to get stacked, and avoiding it is actually a mistake. However if things have changed, then you need to adjust to your new situation. Maybe you flopped top set with :qs4::qc4: on :qd4::jd4::5s4:. You bet, an in position player call. Turn is :3d4:, you bet, in position player call again. River is :10d4:, you check, the in position player makes a big bet of almost full pot. Here you should usually fold, because now you only beat a bluff, and its pretty likely, the in position player has a diamond in his hand after calling you on the flop and turn. So you just need to accept, that you have most likely gotten drawn out on and let it go.

One that still sticks with me was folding top two on the turn after facing a huge raise from a very tight player. It felt awful at the time, but he later showed the nuts, so it ended up being the right decision.

I try to trust my reads, but only when they line up with the action and the player type. Against some opponents, big folds save a lot of money. Against others who are capable of bluffing, I'm much more willing to look them up. It's always a balancing act, but learning to let go of strong hands has definitely improved my results.

For me, it all depends on the amount of chips in the bank. I was grinding my AA teeth when I saw some pair on the table and the opponent was going All-in, or three cards of the same suit. Unfortunately, the top couples on their hands do not always win.

The toughest folds for me are overpairs on scary boards. It never feels good laying them down, but when every bet tells the same story, I've learned to trust my read more often. I'd rather make a disciplined fold and be wrong occasionally than keep paying off every time.

Well, it's difficult to double the best hand, especially when you think you have the strongest combination without knowing what level the way your opponent plays can go.
It's not easy when you know that there may be some project or some combined hand that can beat us, and often intuition tells us what decision to make, analyzing how the player behaves in previous hands and internalizing and accepting the result once the decision is made. Advancing once the result has been given, studying and analyzing the hand, once the table has finished, and most importantly, because the scenarios are going to happen many times and many times with different cards, you will feel in the same situation, most of all it is knowing how to accept the decision you make and two learn from it to see what you can improve on a daily basis.

So I periodically fold strong hands, it all depends on the tournament situation.

It all depends on the situation. My instincts are usually correct. Most of the time I regret going against them when I do.

I think most of my mistakes I have made is me not folding a strong hand. Sometimes we are just supposed to go broke when we have a strong hand and they have a better one, that’s just the nature of the game. The latest one was I flopped two pair and my opponent flopped the straight. I couldn’t fold and busted out of the tournament on that one lol. It happens but we have to let it go and not play scared and move on to the next one!

I've folded AA, KK, and AK—it's part of the game; I usually like to see the flop.

I still struggle folding strong hands. My brain says "you're beat", my finger says "call". Guess which one usually wins lol.

It depends on the situation, but I trust my predictions; sometimes I bet knowing that I'm going to lose, just to maintain a certain style of play.

I do believe at some point you have to pay some hands. just to make Shure you can put the opponent on a range.

i folded queens in a 3-handed live game more than a decade ago. The raising got mad. Can't remember what the other hands were but one had either kings or aces.

Folding a strong hand is sometimes the correct play when your opponent's range is even stronger, especially against tight players, in ICM spots, or when the betting and board strongly indicate you're beat. The decision should be based on ranges, not just hand strength.

I believe it’s quite difficult, but depending on the tournament stage and the stack size (in big blinds), the alternative is to fold without hesitation—provided, of course, that folding is the profitable play. We always have to consider long-term profitability; it’s never easy, but there are situations where you practically have to fold strong hands.
