Many players focus too much on their own hand and forget the most important factor: their opponents.
Poker is not just about what you hold, but about what others might have. Adjusting to different player types—tight, loose, aggressive, passive—is what separates average players from strong ones.
Sometimes a weak hand can win if played correctly against the right opponent.
Do you pay more attention to your cards or to your opponents?

I think strong poker comes from balancing both, but over time I’ve realized opponents usually matter more. Your cards are only one piece of the situation — the same hand can be a fold against one player and an easy value bet against another.
A lot of profits come from understanding tendencies and adapting correctly. Some players bluff too much, some never fold, and others only put money in with strong hands. Once you identify those patterns, even average hands become easier to play profitably.

Most responses to your post will be “both”. After enough hands against the same players, you’ll get a good read on how they play…you can spot the super aggressive players from the ones who are afraid to lose…but you should still play correctly…pick your spots to be aggressive and fold garbage hands…there is no worse feeling in the world than blowing half your stack on a mediocre hand, trying to make the hero bluff, then the next hand gives you pocket aces.

I take both factors into account. In addition, I also take into account position, stage of the tournament, stack size. Only a combination of all these factors can give you a more or less accurate picture.

I think both matter, but opponents usually matter more in the long run. Your cards only tell part of the story — the real edge comes from understanding who you’re up against and adapting to them.
Against some players, top pair becomes an easy fold. Against others, even a weak pair can turn into a profitable call or bluff catcher. That’s what makes poker so deep: the same hand can be played completely differently depending on the opponent.
A lot of players play their own cards. Strong players play the table.

I worry more about my opponents' cards, trying to analyze them based on their plays. I only stop worrying when I go all-in with AA pre-flop.

I think I pay even more attention to my own cards.
But little by little I'm trying to focus more on the players as well. Some people hardly ever bluff and others seem to bet with anything, so this greatly changes the way you should play a hand.
