Lately I’ve started wondering how serious the bot problem really is in online poker.

Sometimes you face players making very strange calls, playing for extremely long sessions, and still showing almost no emotional or strategic mistakes. Of course, variance exists and crazy hands happen in poker every day, but some situations just feel a little “too perfect” or robotic.

I also think RTA tools are becoming part of the discussion now, not only bots. Poker has evolved a lot, and technology is improving fast too.

I’m not accusing any specific platform, because online poker is still beatable and many strong players are simply very skilled. But honestly, do you think bots and assistance tools are becoming a bigger issue than before?

Have you ever played against someone who genuinely felt like a bot?

Mostly the bad rng kills the interesting to play poker , with all the preset hands , the bad beats , the crazy rng results and conflicting hands . Of course bots and rta and AI programs do far more damage . You cannot win against all these all together , it's very hard or impossible, maybe possible online if you have joker bingo player abilities

Mostly, bad RNG kills the interest in playing poker. Between the seemingly preset hands, constant bad beats, crazy runouts, and conflicting situations, the game can start feeling more frustrating than enjoyable.
Of course, bots, RTA tools, and AI-assisted programs do even more damage. Competing against all of that at the same time feels almost impossible sometimes. Maybe you can still win online… but only if you have some kind of “joker bingo” abilities. 😄

The bot and RTA concern in online poker is more relevant today than in the past because tools and training methods have become more advanced. Security systems on major platforms also improved, but so did the ability to play long sessions, use solvers, and behave in a very “mechanical” way, which can sometimes make strong human players look robotic. In many cases what feels like a bot is actually just a highly studied regular with good discipline and low emotional leaks. Real cheating cases do exist, but most of the time the explanation is still skill, experience, and modern strategy rather than automation.

I think that with the various power platforms joining mobile, and the number of people who prefer to play casually on a cell phone, the number of users with these tools tends to decrease, or at least be under control.
I agree with @istbno , I think that most of the time it's the player's experience that counts.

A lack of success in online poker has nothing to do with other players using bots or RTA, especially not when you are a freeroll and microstakes player. Instead the reason is a combination of most likely several of the following factors:

1) The games are raked
2) Lack of skill edge vs. other players
3) Poor game selection
4) Poor bankroll management
5) In the short term you might be running bad

It's not slowly, they are ruining it very fast.

The only safe haven are trusted and carefully monitored private games.

I think bots and RTA tools are definitely a threat to online poker, especially if they go undetected.
They can give unfair advantages and make games less trustworthy for regular players.

That said, major poker sites are investing heavily in detection systems, security teams, and account reviews.
Most recreational players will still find plenty of fair games, especially at lower stakes and in well-regulated rooms.

The long-term health of online poker depends on sites staying aggressive in the fight against bots and RTA.

Online poker has evolved significantly over the last two decades, becoming one of the most popular forms of competitive entertainment on the internet. However, recent technological developments have raised concerns among players and operators alike. The growing use of bots and Real-Time Assistance (RTA) tools has sparked an important debate: are these technologies slowly ruining online poker?

Bots are computer programs designed to play poker automatically without human intervention. They can operate continuously, make mathematically sound decisions, and often play multiple tables at the same time. While some bots are relatively simple, advanced versions can compete effectively against regular players, creating an unfair environment for those who rely solely on their own skills and experience.

RTA tools present an even greater challenge. Unlike bots, RTA software assists a human player during a game by providing strategic recommendations in real time. These tools analyze situations instantly and suggest the most profitable actions based on game theory and large databases of poker solutions. As a result, players using RTA gain a significant advantage over opponents who are playing without technological assistance.

The presence of bots and RTA tools threatens one of poker’s most important principles: fairness. Poker has always been a game that rewards skill, discipline, psychology, and decision-making under pressure. When software begins making decisions for players, the competitive balance is compromised. Recreational players may lose confidence in the integrity of the games and become less willing to participate.

Another concern is the long-term impact on the poker ecosystem. Online poker depends on a healthy mix of recreational and professional players. If casual players believe that they are constantly competing against machines or technologically assisted opponents, they may abandon the game altogether. This reduction in player liquidity can negatively affect the entire industry.

Fortunately, many poker operators are investing heavily in security measures. Advanced detection systems, behavioral analysis, and dedicated integrity teams work continuously to identify suspicious accounts and remove cheaters. Major poker sites have also increased penalties against players caught using prohibited software.

Although bots and RTA tools have not completely ruined online poker, they represent one of the greatest challenges the game has ever faced. The future of online poker will depend on the ability of operators to enforce fair play rules and maintain player trust. If these threats are effectively controlled, poker can continue to thrive as a game of skill, strategy, and competition.
