I have been surprised at the lack of national media coverage

Weird ! Here in the UK, the media are having great fun. "States learned nothing, trying Prohibition again", is a favourite theme.

There`s also the usual silly media overstatement - "Gaming sites will go bust (no, they won`t) because 80% of players are American (no, they`re not) and all Americans will now stop playing" (no, they won`t).

It's completely bizarre! There really is no media coverage regarding the gambling inititiative tacked on to the Port Security bill. There will be discussion about the late Congressional session, but no mention of the sleazy way they attached this to the security bill.

Just my thoughts!

Hello all and thanks for letting me post.

My spouse and I are discussing this issue very heavily right now. What would be the difference between using say a "Net Teller" account vs. your checking account as a means for transferring funds? Just wondering. Trying to get started playing and feel this is putting a damper on my plans as usual.

Actually JQ, I just read that it DOES include checks. If a bank gets a check to cash from anybody that is made out to any gambling site (IE: Pay to the order of PartyGaming), they would be forbidden by US law to honor it.

Let's just hope Neteller is exempt since many people use the Neteller debit card and system in everyday life. I believe that it technically is a "European bank".

EDIT: In fact, here's an excellent link where people have begun to collect info clarifying the issue (including responses from UB & Neteller):

All this does not matter, you Know what does!!! This is your 1000th post Sticker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

at pokerstars, they use western union money transfer. As western union is not a bank, american players can still wire transfer the funds to the sites that support western union money transfers.
When I use Western Union, my funds are transfered to whom I believe is a third party with no mention of the site whatsoever, I've been using it for the past 6mos with no problems, so therefore if your site has a wire transfer option, then I suggest you use it if you can.
BTW, I haven't gotten around to reading any of the articles yet, so I don't know if wire tranfer is mentioned.
Just something to think about for my American friends.

Would hate to lose all the American fishies(present company excluded).....:D

The situation is unclear at the moment, but Neteller should be unaffected.

Neteller is a British bank, based in the Isle of Man (ie.Britain), where online gaming is legal, and one would therefore think that the US government have no jurisdiction over them.

Update.

I found this site:

http://www.gamblingandthelaw.com/

where a learned Professor of Law, who evidently knows much more about it than I do, says that Neteller is safe.

Further update: (sorry, tell me to shut up if I`m boring you)

Neteller shares are among the biggest risers on the London Stock Exchange. Investors seem to think that this could actually be good for their business.

On a more depressing note, I`ve just been watching Sky News (major TV news channel in Europe). Their headline news item is asking -"How is it that Americans can`t legally play poker online, but they can legally buy a gun to shoot children with ?" :( :( :(

CNN Says law calls for ISP's to Block Links to Gaming Sites

CNN has been saying that links to poker sites will be blocked by ISP's in the States. If this is true, this is much more of a problem than the inabilty to use a credit card to pay for gambling because people will not be able to play at all. Also any links from affiliate sites will no longer work.

Has anyone have any information that verifies these reports are true?

I'm pretty sure I did see the mention of the ISP blocking within the bill. However, I honestly can't see this happening. If things like child porn aren't banned on an ISP level, how the hell can they ban something like gambling which isn't even on the same scale in comparison.

Often times though the poker site will cover that fee.

All the major ones do, as far as I`m aware. I`ve never paid a fee yet, and I use Neteller at 10 different poker rooms.

I hate using Neteller, but that's just me.

Why do you hate it JB ? It`s very widely used by we players.

Pokerstars and PartyGaming said they'll block US players when the bill is signed and becomes law. Payment method won't matter. Stars and Party are chickens.

Although I don`t necessarily agree with their action, I can understand why Party have made that announcement. They are a publicly traded company in London and their share price has been under huge pressure. They pretty much had to make an immediate and definite statement about the future shape of their business.

I don`t understand Stars, though. As far as I know, they are not under those pressures and had no need to make any hasty move. These new regulations won`t come in for at least 270 days.

May not be as simple as that - their bankers, Royal Bank of Scotland, seem to be putting pressure on them to ban US players too (they have apparently told them either to ditch US, or find new bankers, which may or may not be possible).

I'm sure this has been posted somewhere but if not.......

Prima sites are crapping out on us now.

Got e-mails from RVP, Pokertime, 32red, and 7 sultans saying that they are closing my accounts at all of them. Had no money there anyway and actually have taken them all off my computer previous to this but still......WTF!

Just gotta say it again........BUSH SUCKS ASS!!!!! Congress SUCK ASS!!!!

Truly insane - The United States, the home of poker (TEXAS hold em - OMAHA hi lo) bans online poker. If you keep your money at a site will you get it back? If you cash out will you ever be able to play again?

Sites are starting to go under, even sites that say they will allow US players to play are going to put under pressure by their banking partners to stop.

Historically, us Brits have taken the piss out of Americans for their idiosyncrasies - plastic surgery, obesity, compensation claims - 5 years later we are just as bad if not worse, so we may be on borrowed time too.
