If you have $10 to play and try to multiply, which format would you choose?
Personally, I prefer tournaments. The upside is bigger, but the downside is the time commitment — it can easily last 3 hours or more.

In poker, time is the most valuable thing. Money comes and goes, but time has only one outcome.

With $10 and the goal of multiplying it, I’d still choose tournaments — but with a plan.

You’re right about the upside. In MTTs, a small buy-in can realistically turn into 20x–100x if you run deep. In cash games, doubling or tripling is possible, but you’re usually grinding small edges and need a bigger bankroll to absorb variance.

That said, here’s how I’d approach it strategically:

🎯 If the goal is maximum upside:

Tournaments win.

  • Higher ROI potential
  • Soft fields at low stakes
  • Satellites can multiply bankroll quickly
  • One deep run changes everything
But you must accept:

  • High variance
  • Long sessions
  • Long stretches with no cash

💰 If the goal is steady growth:

Cash games might be better.

  • You can quit anytime
  • Lower variance (in the short term)
  • Easier bankroll control
  • Skill edge shows more consistently
With only $10, though, cash is tricky unless you’re playing very small stakes (like 2NL) and are disciplined.

My personal choice with $10:

I’d split it:

  • $6–7 into low buy-in MTTs or small field tournaments
  • $3–4 reserved as backup or maybe 1–2 short cash sessions
This way, you give yourself a shot at a spike while still protecting against immediate bust.

The real key isn’t format — it’s:

  • Avoiding tilt
  • Not chasing losses
  • Proper bankroll discipline
If you had to choose only one long-term, I’d say:

  • Love strategy depth and control? → Cash
  • Love big scores and excitement? → Tournaments

Cash games. Tournaments make me nervous because I don’t have enough patience to reach the final table.

Hi. With BR-$10, I would recommend playing MTTs. Mostly freerolls and adding $1 tournaments. That’s how I did it at the beginning.

I agree. The tournament can last three hours or even longer. Nevertheless, I would also choose tournaments. I think in this situation, it would be best to choose tournaments with a buy-in of 25 cents.

Guaranteed breakeven. This is a less obvious advantage of tournaments now that poker rooms have begun offering a sufficient number of knockout events—with prizes for eliminating opponents. If you prioritize eliminating opponents rather than advancing through the prize pool, it's possible to break even in almost every tournament.Tournament players are the focus of attention. Their results are clearly displayed by dedicated online services. For many players, it's important for their success to be visible to everyone. Cash game results are much less impressive to blog or messenger channel readers.

My choice would be cash, NL2, 1 table in the beggining.
+ freerolls+ (other freebies of course)
Witch such a small bankroll I would avoid paid tourneys - too small chances to win anything before $10 is gone.

Definitely tournaments) since in cash games it is very easy to quickly lose money after a cooler.

To play Cash Game, you need 80 Buy In's
NL 2 = 160$

So, better play tournament 1$ or less to try get a big hit and double that mountant.

I prefer cash games because I can pause the session whenever I want, and they also have less variance than tournaments.

Thats overly conservative for the micros. Also if you run out of money, you can just deposit again. So saying, that you need a certain amount of money to play 2NL, is rather silly. Its more relevant to talk about, when you should attempt to move to 5NL. And I would suggest doing that, if you have more than $100 already. This still leave 50BIs for 2NL, which should be more than enough for a winning player.

Tournaments are higher variance than cash games, so this is not good advice. Better to just make another deposit if and when needed.

For 10 dollars is easy to lose on smal stakes, I start with cash games to double or triple the bankrol first , after 50$ maybe play 10 tournaments of 5 dolar max is Better , because 1 dolar tournaments is like freerol and everybody plays like crazy which I don’t like .

I have been playing in tournaments for many years and am completely focused on this area. Tournaments and cash games are very different in nature, so playing both means dividing your attention between two areas. I think those who concentrate on one area will grow and progress faster.

I would choose the format that you like the most and have studied the most, because that's where you'll perform the best. You might lose it all, but if you give it your all, stick to your knowledge and add a bit of luck, you might be able to grow your bankroll little by little. Good luck!

I would choose tournaments. With $10, the potential to multiply your bankroll is much higher. It takes more time, but it’s worth it for the bigger prize and the excitement of the final stages.

I would definitely choose tournament poker. Why? The point is that I have less experience (and skills) in cash games. I also like tournament poker more because I have the opportunity to win a solid amount that is much more than my buy-in.
