When duty calls, what to do?

😺😺😺😺When we are scheduled for an on-call shift and have an important tournament, for which we earned a ticket with great difficulty in a previous tournament, what should we do? Swap shifts with a colleague? Explain to our immediate supervisor what awaits us? Work the scheduled shift and have a split schedule, keeping an eye on the tournament and the work?🐟🐟🐟🐟

A tournament requires full attention anyway... it's better to switch shifts... At work, you get distracted and make mistakes...
 
Call in sick 🤣🤣

I can't say this has happened to me before as I would usually make sure I could play the target tournament before entering a satellite though I have had days when I've gone in with very little sleep, game finished around 4am up for work at 6.

Best to entirely avoid this situation by advance planning. If that fail, then I guess, it depends, how "important" the tournament really is. If the buyin is not exactly a monthly salary or something, probably best to just sit out the tournament and forget about it. But if it really is that important, then maybe follow the advice of Martin and call in sick. I would not tell my boss the real reason for my absense, because I dought, there will be any understanding at all, and you might risk losing your job.
 
For me, these issues resolved themselves naturally: if you can't take time off from work, try to make up for it during your shift. Or even skip the satellite if you know you won't be able to play in your target tournament.

Best move is to swap shifts if you can. Work comes first, but no reason to miss a special tournament if you can arrange it. Playing while working is stressful and risky for both.
 
It’s quite the dilemma. My first thought would be to call in sick but if the buy in is less than a days pay is it really worth it? Obviously I’d rather be playing poker than working so I’d do what I could to make it happen. A shift swap is surely the best outcome here.
 
I personally only play as a hobby, so I try to work my scheduled shifts to avoid becoming addicted to poker.

It happened to me a few times when I was working for the railroad; many times I was already playing when the phone rang calling me to duty. I didn't think twice, I dropped everything and went to answer it. Many of these were emergencies.

Duty comes first, fun comes later.😉
 
I would switch shifts with a colleague, and if I won, I would even give him a tip.
