Hello, I was wondering why this is.

I know that there was one day or something when they banned it, and only certain rooms (which got somehow "checked" ???) are allowed.

Is it due to the fact that its not 100% sure if the sites were legit or rigged??
Or why is that?

thanks

because of playing in poker stars some maniacs from all over the word!

american players banned,in greece if you win pay 25% and 30% taxes....hohoho thats poker!

It's all started from full tilt taking all the money and basically the government did not want this to happen again so banned poker as they got enough to worry about then online poker

It has nothing to do with the sites being rigged or legit, the real reasons are complicated and have to do with the greedy US government. I don't want to start throwing out random info and pointing fingers as there's just way too much to cover and this matter has been discussed deeply about 6 years ago when 'Black Friday' occurred. Please do your research if you're interested in the in-depth legalization policies and don't forget that it's not banned in every single state, there's still states such as New Jersey that allows PokerStars and such.

I play poker and I'm from Greece, I'm sorry but it doesn't work like that, you should get your facts right! 🙂

US courts have indicted the founders of the three largest US online poker companies and their websites have been seized. In all, there are eleven defendants - including the founders of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker - for bank fraud, money laundering and illegal gambling. In the US and in several countries around the world, domain names such as FullTiltPoker.net, AbsolutePoker.com and PokerStars.com have been banned by the FBI
For those who may be unfamiliar with the name the UIGEA was the law created to ban online poker from the United States and that ultimately led to the famous Black Friday.
The "father" of that law was Dennis Hastert and at the time quoted the "great American values" to defend the exclusion of online poker in the US, now the values are different and Hastert is involved in a blackmail scheme and is accused of having deflected $ 3,500,000 Various bank accounts.
Nothing better than one day after another do not you think?

when the government will find a way to tax poker it allowed back))

Like with most laws in the US, lobbyists define America's stance on the issue. Lobbyists from the lottery companies, and existing casinos "donate" to politicians and public officials to keep tabs on competitors.

If and when online gambling is legalized in the US, many believe it could effect bingo halls, casinos, card rooms, lottery earnings, and other forms of gambling who currently have the gambling market cornered in the US.

Another example of lobbyists dictating laws, are the alcohol and tobacco lobbyists who pay for anti-marijuana legalization campaigns.

Didnt Hastert get a sex crime conviction too? Effingham hypocrit, damn I detest politicians.

To do with tax, etc.

At least you Americans can play live poker. Live poker is illegal in Northern Ireland. 🙁

The problem in the huge turnover of money and transparency - time was lost for a dialogue with the government

Through a lot of poker rooms, money was not laundered by good people.

Taxation... poker sites are registered in countries like Isle of Man and Gibraltar, so it means less taxes to US gov that, of course, prefer that you play in a local Casino.
In fact the lobby (that is crime in a lot of countries but is legal in the US) had a good influence in it.

But if you prefer it is to combat the money laundering, evasion and Bank Fraud.

Its not really illegal, a bill snuck in that it is illegal to use US banks to deposit and withdraw money, which is what PS and FT allowed, that is where the problem came in.

ya i think they snuck a bill in to get them more money greed
i misses my pokerstars hahah!!!

Actually marijuana was mostly banned by nylon lobbyists because they knew hemp farms would be attacked by cops due tot the similar look and no one bought anything nylon until the marijuana outlawing (meaning even possessing it or using it in materials became outlawed, hemp industry was heavily hit by mistaken DEA operations, this immediately caused a huge increase in the purchases of nylon ropes and tents amongst other things).

I believe all this mess was made by the US goverment to help economically the local casinos and the bussinessmen who owned them in many states , which is unfair , politicians shouldn't have attacked pokerstars and the other sites , this was all wrong . If it's real that Full Tilt didn't have enough funds to operate normally , they should have dealt only with FT , not with all 🙁 All these internet antigambling laws , I don't get it , bring back pokerstars , 888, partypoker and all other pokerrooms to all US states !! 🙂

the poker is very popular. I hope that over time it will be resolved everywhere. you give a new poker boom in the world!!!

No doubt. You'd think our Lords and masters in DC would figure out a way to tax the crap out of online games like they do everything else! Vegas doesn't want it, bottom line.

In short

1. it is not illegal to play poker online, however it is illegal for banks to process any transaction from "online gaming". So in order to offer games to Americans, all sites have to find ways around this law (mostly illegal ways).

2. Why are Americans not allowed to gamble online, well answer corrupt politicians and casino lobbyists that pay them. That is pretty much it . . .

This is done to ensure that people gamble in casinos. It is beneficial to the casino owners in the United States.

There's a lot more to it than that, actually. In the handful of years before it was banned, America was dealing with prohibition of alcohol and really didn't give a crap about marijuana. They were more concerned with the increasing crime rates as a result of the alcohol ban. Enter the lifting of the prohibition and suddenly the Department of Prohibition had nothing to do. So he decided that cannabis was dangerous, after all. Long story short, of the 30 scientists he contacted to ask if cannabis was dangerous, 29 replied saying no. One person replied with a yes. He picked this person to present to the media and the rest is history.
