Hi PS rep
I have a technical question (or at least for me it is). I only play on Stars, and it might be different from site to site, so therefor this is a Stars related question. So here goes....
When does the software stack the deck. Are all 52 cards stacked before a hand is dealt or does it do it as it puts cards on the flop.
I remember learning that to randomize, the computer uses the clicker or something like that, and then does a semi randomization from that.
If that is still how a random hand is generated then it depends on at what time it is generated.
I the stack is made before the hand starts it does not matter how long time I use deciding etc., the flop, turn and river will be the same. But if the cards are randomized as the program needs another card, then it all depends on how long I take to call or do stuff.
I mostly think about this when I have folded in a 3 way pot and I then see the flop or turn etc. If I see that I should have called or it was a good fold and I did not miss anything, then I think at the same time about the question I have here. If I had called instead of folded the timing would have been different and the cards not the same anyway, unless the deck is stacked before the hand starts.
Hope you or someone else can answer this as the question often pops in to my head.
Hi Grindabod,
Another poster has already chimed in on this, but here is the full explanation regarding the randomness and method of our shuffle:
PokerStars' shuffle software is, in fact, truly random, and produces a deck which is completely fair and unpredictable.
To do so, it takes two completely and truly random sources of information:
1) Player input (e.g. mouse movements, key strokes, clicks, etc.)
2) A physical random number generator exploiting an elementary quantum optics process
These are combined to create a completely random number. This is then used to shuffle the cards - you can read about exactly how this is done here:
http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/room/features/security/
Because nobody can predict either of the two sources of information, the number generated by our Random Number Generator (RNG), and consequently the order of the cards, is completely random in a mathematical sense.
In order to copy real life poker as much as possible, PokerStars uses a static shuffle. This means once the deck is shuffled, it is set, and the order in which the cards are dealt cannot be changed. Additionally, the cards are not reshuffled continuously all through a hand, and those that come out on any given round are totally independent of any player action.
Not only does this mean that the shuffle at PokerStars is just like at a live casino (the cards are shuffled and *then* dealt) it also gives you confidence that is is *impossible* for PokerStars to have so-called 'action flops' or biased rivers: since the order of cards is pre-determined prior to player actions, it is impossible for the PokerStars server to predict future player actions and favour particular players. We feel that this confidence is important to fair and honest
poker games.
Kind Regards,
Dylan
