Many of poker players believe poker is a game of skill. Lets compare with one of the skill game out there. Football! we know that the best team not always win. A team with bunch of skilful and expensive players sometimes could not beat 100k budget team. Do you think there is a downswing in football? for ex, MU 😀 Are there variance? and what do u think a game which has the most similarity to poker.

Dating has variance, m8. Sometimes you can pick up a nice pair, sometimes you hit a cooler. 😀

Silly American!
Totally misread the post.

lol

There is variance in everything really..

Chess is often associated with poker and people often say chess is 100% skill with no luck involved I disagree, Is it not lucky that if an opponent who is just a little better then you makes a mistake that they don't make 9 out of 10 times?

Football (American Football)

There is all kinds of variance - Refs make a bad call, A fumble, A dropped pass, a player getting knocked out on a big hit, injuries, weather, a shanked punt, a muffed kick return...

I'm sure in soccer the refs make bad calls due to flops which could be considered variance or miss an off sides or whatever...

If not because of the variances, the same team will win the world cup everytime each 4 year.

In the chess case, I'd call that a skill error, not luck.

Definitely true that there's some elements of luck in sports though. One of the good arguments for NFL (IIRC it's Football Outsiders that I'm borrowing this from) is around fumbles: when your defence forces a fumble, that's a skill. When your offense allows a fumble, that's a skill error. Recovering a fumble is mostly down to luck though, as the random chance of which way the ball bounces or who it bounces closest to is the biggest determining factor.

Well anything could be skill error.. Sometimes recovering a fumble comes down to hustling and putting yourself in a position to make a play such as recover a fumble. Since you're more likely to recover a fumble if you play till the whistle..

but yeah sometimes the ball just bounces in your hands

If you have a referee with poor skills and ability then sure there can be lots variance in his decision making or the calls he makes.

Or if he has a poor stamina or maybe he had a few pint before the game then sure he can bring a lot of variance.

What if he is a big fan of one or two teams himself and gives marginal decisions in favour of these teams so that they have a better chance.

So is football a game of variance ?? Hmmm .. well lets just say not as much as poker is ..... 😛layingba

Speaking of fans, does any one (Americans) remember when a fan ran onto the field and took the ball out of Brett Farves' hands as he was about to throw it during a play?

Huge variance.

I think Van Gal do not coach for Manchester United , he is better manifests itself with young footballers in Ajax . In Barcelona, he has shown nothing

In football and poker game can be built as a defense against (Italian clubs) and on the attack (Barcelona) .If poker tilt, the football physical fatigue and decline form (last year Atletico madrid won championship but forces in the Champion league was not enough and Real Madrid won)
