The basketball is a joke but nothing can be done about it. I don't know how Americans can get excited about watching or winning it though.

GB dominating so far. 10 behind America and China still 2 clear. I love you guys but when it comes to the Olympics, **** America.

Years ago athletes could not even accept prize money for winning at various venues, and the money was placed in trust until they either retired or turned pro. Anyone who plays sport for a living should not be allowed to compete irrespective of the sport ( I include sports scholarships offered by Universities which are a form of payment to compete ). My sons team were fortunate to pick up dedicated sponsors over 4 yrs and spent close to $1/2m in that time travelling to compete with the best. When they won their Gold medal in Torino, they received a tad over $100,000 between the 4 of them which could only be used for training and sport related expenses which had to be accounted for. Sure we all want to see the best in the World compete at the Olympics, but when teams or individuals who work full time and earn a living from their sport, compete against teams who might play together once a week or month, it makes a mockery of the winning result.

Thank you for clarifying. Philosophically, we are in aggreement, and actually your views may be a little more stringent than mine. I have no particular qualms about seeing scholarship athletes from Universities at the Olympics, but absolutely feel that out-and-out professionals should be banned in all sports. I could absolutely bicker and say that having corporate sponsors isn't that far removed from having athletic scholarships, but it seems we are generally in aggreement. Irregardless of that, I think, unfortunately, that the world has largely passed-by people with our train of thought. Everybody wants to see the pros nowdays.

Actually there are at least a few of us who don't. I don't actively root for the Men's and/or Ladies BB players to lose, but I have no interest in watching them either. Now, if it were like it used to be, with Collegiate players, then I absolutely would be far, far more supportive of them. (FWIW, I'd still take odds on our best Collegians v. any other nation's pros in basketball🙂 ).

As far as the total medal counts and such..... that has always been a rigged race. The US enjoys a huge population from which to draw from and is an affleuent country so that athletes can get top-notch training. With the break-up of the Soviet Union, who used to be our main competitor in medal count, the only real competitor will be China. Other countries either lack the population-base from which to draw athletes, or are less affleuent nations where each athlete may not be able to reach his peak potential due to economic restraints, or both.
 
It really pisses me off that America use the total medal count when everyone else including the IOC (unofficially) use the gold medal count. The one that matters. It's just a way of rigging it so America can win in the only way they can. What I've heard of how NBC present the coverage as well is quite saddening.

Wow, gonna be a LOT of sad athletes, from America and everywhere else, who got silver or bronze medals only to realize that they don't matter🙁 . As far as coverage I've not watched any foreign coverage of the games, but I'd be surprised if GB media, and every other media in the world, does not spin things to reflect the best on their athletes. Just the way of the world.
 
Can't really blame the US for choosing to show the medal table in a way that puts them on top. The US wants to see US winners. China wants to see Chinese winners and GB wants to see GB winners. Poor old Australia, they dont know what a gold medal looks like, hahahahaha? Bad winners and even worse losers :beer:


ps dont you hate the way the GB team is always refered to as Team GB, corporate slogan nonesense.

Every medal matters and I'm delighted for everyone who won a medal as I'm sure they are but the medal table which shows the success of the countries as a whole is sorted by gold. Except in America.

Winning a medal of any colour is a wonderful achievement and I will never try and take anything away from that. I just find American propaganda quite funny.

As far as the TV coverage goes, I like being able to watch it live and to see some of our athletes give everything and lose and not have it hidden away from me.

Thankfully I have a site where I can live stream BBC1 & 2 from the UK, I have seen sports on there NEVER shown over here. Air Pistol, clay shooting, Tai Kwon do ect. God help us when Rio comes around, the frikkin CBC have the contract, no choice at all unless they add channels ( which I doubt ) CTV have done a pretty good job with London.
 
The BBC coverage has been outstanding, something like 2,500 hours of live coverage over the two weeks. We have BBC1/2/3 for everyone and then about 20 new channels on satellite tv just for the Olympics. No advertising at any point and the commentary and re-caps have been brilliant. Proud we can bring such a massive show to the world so well. And how it's meant to be seen.

Dissapointed by Blakes performance, really though he could run Bolt close.
 
knew bolt would take it down to. he's amazing. when exact does dream team play again? we only get to see when match is played lol.
 
Congrats to the Canadian Womens team on a super comeback to take a Bronze medal ( after a 80 yr break since Canada won a team medal at the summer games ) pissed off though that wombat scored a gold, she is the worst kind of sport, a whiner, and the dumbass Norwegian Ref, who in over 40 yrs of watching football, gave the 1st indirect free kick inside the penalty area because some twot (wombat) tormented the bejesus out of her). Message to FIFA, please use professional staff in Rio. Saw many nasty and late tackles during the tournament, yet only saw one yellow card awarded, guess to who? wombat !! A win at all cost player who poisons new players entering the elite level.

If there's one thing I hate about sport, it's a posturing influential player, and a weak minded official who panders to the whiner. Thankfully the Norwegian ref will never be seen at another games, along with the 2 water polo judges, the boxing judge and other 2 officials who have been sent home in disgrace. . With a captain like wombat, the ship will eventually sink with all hands. . I appreciate your support for your country, but as usual, the derogatory sportmanship of your "team" belittles your efforts, which they don't deserve.

MAD? no, just hate cheats who get away with it. Including stupid and blind officials, watch the video, around 15 mins fron full time, Japan had a free kick prolly 40yds from goal, a US defender had her arm around the waist tugging the shirt of a Japanese player, then wrapped both arms around her waist holding her down when the cross came in. Known you for a long time JD, and ill bet you didn't even watch the game, lol.
