"NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire finally came clean, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998.

McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade. During a 20-minute telephone interview shortly afterward, his voice repeatedly cracked.

"It's very emotional, it's telling family members, friends and coaches, you know, it's former teammates to try to get a hold of, you know, that I'm coming clean and being honest," he said. "It's the first time they've ever heard me, you know, talk about this. I hid it from everybody."

McGwire said he called commissioner Bud Selig and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa earlier in the day to personally apologize."

yea he came out so that he can get in tha hall of fame next barry bonds then roger clemens will come out
 
Figured he had to come clean because he will be the new Cardinals hitting coach. Don't see how he could have pulled that off if he didn't address this before the season.
 
He has no choice but to admit taking steriods. But he has to deliver a very good story to show that he was a victim rather than a user so the public will blame circumstances rather than players who take them.
 
This shortly after getting only 23% of hall of fame votes. He realizes he wouldnt get in at that rate.
 
Old news. Everyone knew he did roids. Find me a player who isn't roiding I'll find you 100 who are
 
Hes an idiot. The next one will eventually be Bonds. They all want in the Hall and will come out and admit it.

Yeah, I think it's been painfully obvious. That was a different era in baseball and a bunch of guys did roids. The ones that profited most from it have also paid a heavy price. McGwire is coming clean, and I think he deserves plenty of credit for it. Baseball paid the heaviest price though, the homerun record is tainted, and probably beyond reach.
 
Mark McGwire was using steroids!!!??...........................DUH!!! Who would have figured....
 
I like baseball a lot. If the players want to use steroids let them I really do not care. It's all just a show for me.

At this point I would be more shocked if someone admitted they didn't use steroids.
 
why does it matter its obviouse no one cares what baseball players did i mean barry balco bonds is still the homerun leader so good for mark but no one cares😎

Good for him but it really does suck that he holds the record that dont belong to him..... misewell watch wrestling lets see who the best wrestler is going to be:hmmmm:

Is it really so surprising that he did roids? All leaders of our free country, the biggest role models we have, the persons charged with leading our people, have all lied to us so it's really no surprise that everyone else is lying too.
 
The Hall of Fame votes this time around is what I think convinced him the need to do something.

It will take a while, a long while for him to get there. I would almost bet the farm the votes will never be there.

this is a comple publicity stunt...he thinks that by coming clean he will get more votes for getting inducted into the hall of fame....if he gets into the hall of fame than someone should get rid of it and make a new one...this guys a joke and if u watch his interview u can watch him act like hes crying and try to wipe away a tear that doesn exist on his face.

The public don't seem very forgiven of his actions. I feel sorry for him. He was the idol of some which makes it hard also. Too bad!
