Roger Federer is an amazing athlete. Tennis is such an athletic & endurance sport & I know some people think it's boring to watch but once you really realize how tough the sport is, seeing some of the players do what they do like Federer is just amazing.

I don't watch tennis as much as I used to & because of that I sure miss seeing Federer own the court. I used to see him & Nadal in about every final. They were such badazz matches

Counting number of championships as a qualifier in baseball as a great is not even fair. Secondly, you cant really pick any baseball player who played before black people and Hispanic people were allowed to play.

Ok he has a high batting avg etc but news flash, everyone did. Im not saying he wasnt great but hes certainly not the best.

In todays game with the watered down pitching, Ruth would hit 100 plus dingers every year. Iron horse was good but he's no babe, just sayin.

Weird that poker hasn't been mentioned much. Just goes to show that we don't place it alongside conventional sports.

And Jones is great but he hasn't had long enough to prove himself as the greatest. Anderson is closer than Jones TBH.

So, Pete Rose, who came up in like 1960 should be disqualified as well since OBVIOUSLY many Black and afro-carribeans (I think Hispanic is too broad here...) had significantly less opportunities at development than White American players did in the 1940s/50s when Rose grew up.

You cannot act as though just before Jackie Robinson there were no great players and right after everything instantaneously changed overnight....it didn't work that/doesn't work that way when you desegregate something.

Also, I don't think winning one or 2 WS's is a great barometer for most players....but six????

I think its safe to say that can be considered one of SEVERAL criteria for establishing a greatest ever.

Certainly without the championships Bill Russell wouldn't get a nod very often for GOAT in BB, and that is wholly unfair bc the whole point of sports is to WIN.

Well actually if you adjust for avg. from the period he played to now (last 15 yrs) he would be hitting about .328 lifetime. Better than Alber Pujols!!!!

12 yrs as top 4 (11 as top 4) in slugging Pct. which is a better indicator of game impact anyway.

Also, he was a top 5 average man for 10 yrs in the era when Babe Ruth played!!!

Now, since you WANTED to mention that stuff about period differential....lets adjust the HR/RBI numbers in the EXACT SAME WAY...:

....AND Babe Ruth was the greatest hitter of that generation inches beyond Gehrig....

Unfortunately for you Gehrig was a 5 tool player (well arm at that position...) who won games in the field and who could stretches singles into doubles/ and doubles into triples etc. And while Ruth was a good pitcher for a relatively short time, he was also a pretty bad fielder and almost certainly a liability in the OF bc he had almost no range to speak of.

That coupled with the leadership and intangibles put him over Ruth in the ALL AROUND category.

Its sad no one has mentioned Willie Mays though...he definitely belongs in the discussion.
