Is this a low stakes live game or a mid stakes online game? That might matter at least a bit as far as player tendencies and competence goes.

Since its a rainbow board, and we have AJo, there is no BDFD meaning we flopped a gutshot with an overcard and the second nut nothing. This is a hand, where I think, we can go both ways. Betting has some protection benefits, but we also have enough showdown value to check back and take a free card. The more, the opponent is going to check-raise, the less I like betting here, because we dont really want to get check-raised.

Turn
This card changed nothing, and I think, your hand is to in between to bet either for value or as a bluff. So yeah take a free card and lets play the river.

River
Sadly another brick so you are still left with A high. If this is live poker, I would rely quite a bit on whatever reads, I had on the opponent. But without reads I think, you said it yourself already. Having a J in your hand is bad, because it block the main busted draws, so this is not a good hand to bluff catch. And since you clearly only beat a bluff, its a good fold.

Ok I have no idea about player pool tendencies there. I still think, you played the hand fine, but that betting the flop is optional, and should probably be avoided against opponents, who check-raise a lot.
