In a Progressive Knockout (PKO) event, how deep does a player's bounty need to be before you can mathematically justify calling off your stack with absolute trash like 9-5 suited?

The way to do the math in bounty tournaments is to convert the value of the bounty to chips. Lets say the starting stack is 5.000 chips, and its the traditional PKO structure, where half the price pool is bounties, and you only win half the bounty, when you knock someone out. Then a bounty is worth 5.000 / 4 = 1.250 chips. This number will go up during the tournament, as money is taken out of the price pool either by players being knocked out, or by the tournament having reached ITM. But typically bounties will also go up, as surviving players are more likely to have knocked someone out.

Lets say, someone have lost most of their stack, and blinds have also gone up. Blinds are now 50/100, and this player only have 1.400 chips left, which is 14BB. It folds to them in CO, and they jam all-in. BTN and SB fold, and now action is on us in BB. Assuming a 1BB ante, normally we would be paying 13BB to win a pot of 2 X 14BB + 1,5BB (SB and ante) = 29,5BB. In Chip-EV we would need 44% equity to make a break-even call. We can use a program like ICMizer to give us our calling range, but we can also pull out Equilab and assign them a range ourselfes.

I would assume, that someone, who lost most of their chips, are probably a little tilted and want to get back in the game. So my range for this player will be any pair, any suited ace, A8o+, KJ+, T9s+, which is 20% of hands. 95s has 34.4% equity against that range, so as expected that would be a clear fold in a normal game. However with the bounty we can win a pot of 2 X 14BB + 1,5BB + 12,5BB = 42BB, so now we only need 31.0% equity, and 95s is a profitable call. However we should still not be calling with any two cards. For instance J2o only has 29,2% equity and should be folded.

That's a really clear way to break it down. I like how you convert the bounty into chip value first instead of just saying "the bounty is big, so call wider." The 95s example makes a lot more sense with the math behind it. It's a good reminder that even in PKOs, it's not "any two cards"—you still need enough equity to justify the call. Converting bounty into chip value (ChIP-ev) makes decision-making in PKOs much easier.
This account removes the “guess” and clearly shows how mathematics justifies the call in certain situations.

There isn’t a universal bounty size where calling with 9-5 suited suddenly becomes correct. It depends on the effective stack, the pot, the opponent’s range, the tournament stage, and whether you cover the player.

In a PKO, the bounty can be converted into additional chip equity and added to the normal pot odds. The bigger the bounty is compared to the effective stack, the wider you can call. However, 9-5 suited still has very poor equity against a strong all-in range, so the bounty usually needs to be extremely significant, especially if you are risking your entire tournament life.

If you cover the opponent, the bounty has more value because you are guaranteed to receive it when you win. If you are covered, ICM and the risk of elimination make the call much worse. So the real question is not only, “How big is the bounty?” but:

“How much of my stack is at risk, how often am I winning, and how much is the bounty worth in relation to that risk?”

Against a wide shove from a short stack, 9-5 suited might become a reasonable bounty call. Against a tight range or when the stacks are deeper, I would still fold it most of the time. In other words, the bounty can justify calling wider, but it does not completely remove the need for equity.

I believe we consider not only the bounty value but also our stack size and how well-positioned we are to play against the opponents involved in the hand. When our stack comfortably covers the opponents and the bounty is significant, it becomes a call scenario without requiring complex calculations. I admit, however, that I still need to study the concept of converting the bounty into equity. @fundiver199 it provided a quick and effective lesson on this topic, practicing this scenario is the ideal way to master this situation. If you dont cover the opponent, the bounty has no value at all, and you should just call with your normal range. Maybe you can all a pinch wider, because it has value for future play to build a big stack, and min-cashes or payjumps are less important, since they only apply to half the price pool. But these are very subtle differences, like maybe you can call one hand wider say AJ+ instead of AQ+ or 77+ instead of 88+. You should also widen your calling range less, when you have players left to act behind you, since they could also wake up with a hand and decide to go bounty hunting, especially if they also have you covered.

Great question, and @fundiver199 is spot on about converting bounty value to chips.
While you need complex software (like HRC or ICMIZER) to get the exact mathematical threshold for every unique spot, a quick rule of thumb many PKO regs use is to convert the cash bounty into a chip value and add it to the pot.
If a PKO bounty represents 30% of your current stack size, and the direct pot odds only require you to need 30% equity, the bounty adds roughly 10% 'extra equity' on top. In extreme cases (like short stacks with huge bounties near the final table), you can mathematically justify calling off needing as little as ~35% equity, which can bring very weak hands into profitability.
That said, 9-5 suited is still pushing it unless their stack is microscopic compared to their bounty!

That's a great explanation. I like that there isn't a magic bounty threshold where any two cards suddenly become profitable. It's really about converting the bounty into chip EV and then weighing that against your equity, stack at risk, and ICM. I guess the biggest mistake players make is seeing a huge bounty and forgetting that they still need enough equity for the call to be profitable.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I like the "30% of your stack around 10% extra equity" rule of thumb-it gives a practical way to think about bounty value without running every spot through software. And I agree, even with a massive bounty, 9-5 suited still feels like a stretch unless it's a very specific short-stack, huge-bounty situation.
