I'm curious for people's thoughts on this topic. I've noticed that in microstakes, as blinds get bigger and stacks get shorter(like 30BB and less), players on the button will sometimes raise bigger than usual, as in 4-4.5BB rather than 2-3BB. I know we can usually call raises fairly wide from the big blind, given we're usually getting good odds, and I assume we should be calling a tighter range accordingly vs plays like this. Curious as to how much this should affect the calling (and 3bet?) range, especially vs looser opponents you often get in microstakes who seem to love abusing these sorts of aggressive plays.
Good question — this is something that comes up a LOT in microstakes and it confuses people.
You’re thinking about it the right way: bigger sizing = tighter response, but the *why* matters.
When BTN goes 4–4.5bb at ~30bb stacks, a few things are usually true at these stakes:
1. It’s often not balanced (they’re not doing it with a proper range)
2. It’s either a stronger range… or a weaker player trying to “bully” with random hands
So instead of just tightening blindly, I’d adjust like this:
**From BB:**
- Yes, call tighter — you’re losing the price advantage
- But also **3-bet jam more vs loose players** who are over-opening or clicking buttons
For example:
- Hands like Axs, KQ, 77–99 can become really good jams vs someone opening too wide
- While hands like weak suited connectors drop off because you’re not getting the right odds anymore
You’re shifting from *defending wide* → *punishing bad sizing*
A lot of these players don’t realize that by going bigger, they’re actually committing more vs short stacks and making themselves easier to play against.
Also worth noting:
At microstakes, players massively under-defends vs these big opens — so if you adjust correctly, it’s a nice edge.
Just out of curiosity, are you seeing this more from certain player types (like recreational players), or regs trying to apply pressure?
I’ve been reviewing a bunch of microstakes hands lately and this exact spot comes up a lot — small adjustments here actually make a pretty big difference to winrate.
Cheers mate
