Do you ever feel like survival and winning require opposite strategies?

One thing I’ve noticed in tournaments is that the strategy for simply surviving often feels very different from the strategy needed to actually build a stack and win.
Sometimes playing carefully helps you last longer, but it can also leave you too short later on. Other times, taking risks early can either set you up for a deep run or send you out quickly.
It makes me wonder if a lot of players focus too much on surviving instead of putting themselves in position to win the tournament.
How do you balance survival versus accumulation during different tournament stages?

In tournaments, especially regular ones, you have time to wait for good hands to build a good stack. I don't think there's a need to take too many risks right at the beginning. I think the ideal time to take risks is when you're already itm, and usually everyone's stacks are shorter.

In the early stages I focus more on accumulating chips rather than surviving. Blinds are small in relation to stacks, so well chosen risks can be justified. With too cautious playing, one can easily end up in the middle stages without resources to pressure others.

Tactics achieve short-term goals, while strategy advances long-term objectives. The difference between strategy and tactics is their scale.

The only difference between these two strategies relies on the number of bullets (rebuys / funding / investor/s) you have in your wallet!

In the early stages, I focus on accumulation by taking profitable spots and building a stack. As the tournament progresses and pay jumps become more important, I balance aggression with survival, avoiding unnecessary risks. Near the final table, I adjust based on stack sizes and pressure, looking for opportunities to accumulate chips while protecting my tournament life.

I think the balance changes throughout the tournament. Early on, I focus more on building a stack because there is plenty of play left and chips have a lot of value. But as the bubble or important pay jumps get closer, survival becomes a bigger factor.
The mistake, in my opinion, is focusing only on survival. If you always avoid risks, you often end up with a short stack and very little chance of making a deep run. I try to take good opportunities to accumulate chips while avoiding unnecessary gambles. The goal is not just to cash, but to give yourself a realistic chance of reaching the final table and competing for the win.

Just let ICM be your guide.

The better you understand the ICM of the format the easier the decisions will be for you.

It depends on how you play; the strategies can seem similar. I say this because, for example, if you're playing to survive, then you play more carefully, basically taking risks with top pair or premium cards. Often, when you're playing to win, you can also play very carefully to avoid jeopardizing your stack. Because, let's be honest, playing to win doesn't always mean playing like nothing matters. Sometimes you take more risks, and other times you're more cautious.

Yes, I feel the same way. There are definitely times when I want to focus on survival, but then I get dealt such a strong hand that there's no way I can pass it up.

Even when I'm thinking about surviving and moving up the payouts, I end up playing to win because the opportunity is just too good to ignore. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but that's what usually happens to me. Sometimes the best way to survive is to avoid risks, while the best way to win is to take them when the situation calls for it.

I think many players focus too much on survival, especially near the bubble. Surviving is important, but without accumulating chips it’s very hard to make a deep run. For me, the key is adjusting to the stage of the tournament and looking for good spots to build a stack rather than just trying to stay alive
