Do you keep track of average stack?

Do you keep track of your stack size and how it compares to average stack and biggest stack of all the tourney players?

Most of the time the biggest stacks due to winning big flips are like 10 times the average stack. Are we good on staying close with the average stack, should we aiming to have double the average stack, of should we too try to risk some flips in order to get close to bigger stacks?

How is your stack compares to others when playing a tourney and what are your tourney results most of the time?

I constantly compare my stack to the average, but I don't really play around it.

On the other hand, I can play differently according to my position. I like to be in the top half of the field, which I'm satisfied with. Of course if I'm in the top 10% or so, it's even better, but I consider I don't have anything to worry about if I'm in the first half. I start to worry a bit if I'm in the last 20-25%, and usually wait for a top hand and try to double up trough a player with a much bigger stack than me.

I will keep an eye on it, but I focus more on chip stacks at my table.

Very nice question! I try to check where I stand compared to the average but to be honest I focus more on how many big blinds I have left.

The amount of my BBs determine how tight or loose I open raise / 3bet or how wide I am gonna call a shove against a small stack.

Your stack can easily get boosted by one, two or even three double ups.

Life is easier and final tables seem a bit closer with many BBs . This is a scenario many strong regulars try to accomplish my boost their BBs in some critical spots!

I always check the average stack in the tournament. It helps me give an indicator as to being within the pack necessary to finish in the money.

I never use average stack as an indicator. It's always skewed by the big stacks near the top and often only the top 25-30% of players are above average stack. As such, I play based on position in the field, aiming to stay in the top 70 %

Yes it is always good to know the average stack in tournament and also the final table average many times in middle of tournament even the chip leader will be no where near the FT average and will still have a lot of work to do good luck

This was a really great read,

I use it as a way of figuring out the total chips in play ( if average is 5,500 with 100 left obv the total chips in play is 550,00) Thus I know where I stand and how i should play accordingly

Yes, I am checking this regularly. I also look at my rank in how many are left and how many places are paid.

Yes keeping track of average stack and refreshing My Position on stars is 1 of my bad habits haha, but I do think it helps

I don't keep track of the avg stack. I think looking at things like that affect your thinking. It could make you think you need to "win a pot" because you are lower than avg or that you have "extra" chips to play around with, even on a subconscious level.

I just look at the blinds. If I have 20x the bb I'm fine. I don't care if I'm the smallest stack in the tournament, I'm good. Stacks go up and down through the tournament.

I find it is more important to know how many BB everyone at the table has.

It would be more useful to know what the median was vs the average in the later stages of a tournament.

Voted yes, I care a lot, probably too much. And in the rare case I don't, it's because I have a big stack, I then check how I compare to the chip leader(s).

Its important to know what average stack is when nearing the $$ or the FT, knowing how many you have outchipped is very important in these scenarios.

It is good to know where I stand in the tourney and where I am at at the table. This helps my decisions but if I get a big stack I try to keep going with it. Getting the big stack is good to have when late. It is also good to keep your chips instead of playing too loose too though. Because if you win a solid hand every 10-20 min you can jump places pretty quick. It really doesn't matter what place you are in to win the tourney. It's all about timing and perfect decisions. And also running good when you get it in with the best hand.

I like all the answers, but I can see that most regulars answered that what that they focus more on the number of big blinds left. Which I get is somewhat similar but not exactly the same. I will have that in mind for when to go for the double up or when to make some moves. I also get Protential saying that its useful to know where you stand when close to money or the final table or for me at any table really, to play accordingly. Thanks for the answers everyone!

Can you expand on this? Why would it matter to know the average stack at the FT? and why would you let that influence the way you play?

Knowing who is the big stack who will play tight and you should avoid big confrontation, knowing who are the small stacks that will sooner or later will shove, knowing how you compare to the middle stacks that are able to make some moves is always good not on the final table but any table really.

Also comparing your stack with others close to the bubble is for most of us already a factor, many will fold hands that would definately shove otherwise if there is like one small stack waiting to get busted to get you in the money.

Umm I always keep track of my stack. I also keep an eye on others stacks. Stack sizing is important as anything else. The size will dictate how and when I take chances or sit back a wait. I don't necessarily think about being "average". What is important is the number of BB in relation to blind level. I like to stay above 30 BB at all times, of course the more the better. A player should always keep in mind the level and number of chips one has. When I dip into the 20 BB range then I know it's getting time to start shoving my bigger hands if I get them. Especially 20-25 BB. If I dip into 1-19BB then I'm shoving with just about anything

I don't pay to much attention to the largest stack , it usually doesn't affect my play in any way.
Unless he's at my table . But I do keep track of the average stack and try to keep pace with it . I feel comfortable at average stackand don't feel that I have to force my play .
