Just realized I’ve spent the last four hours deep-running a tournament I only registered for because I couldn't sleep.
Now it's 4:00 AM, the birds are starting to chirp outside, and I have to be at work in a few hours. No regrets though—made the final table and the coffee tomorrow will just have to do some heavy lifting.
Good luck at the tables everyone, hope your sessions are going better than my sleep cycle!

Oops, I definitely don't recommend to start a game that late, but well, how did it finally go?

For me its more common, that I wake up early after sleeping maybe only 4-5 hours and then start to play poker instead of trying to get the sleep, I actually need. This is not great either, and my best advice is to either not do this or at least play games, that you can exit fairly quickly, if your "sleep train" arrives. Like cash games or fast SnGs. This time you ran deep, which is of course cool, but in general we dont play our A-game, when we are sleep deprivated. So in the long run its more of a bankroll burner than bankroll builder to play poker, when we should be sleeping.

Indeed... Sleep is a precious commodity that we don't recover, even if we try to sleep longer the next day to compensate.

But I think in these cases it would be easier to find some quick games (cash or SnGs as our friend @fundiver199 mentioned).

I've been through this several times, starting to play later and having to end up playing late into the night because I was in the money and/or close to the final tables!

If you actually make some money in the end, that's a positive thing... But on the other hand, we're trading money for a bit of health, and that's not a fair trade in my opinion... But that doesn't mean that doing it sporadically is so harmful!

It might be okay once in a while, but doing it frequently becomes unsustainable.

And you need to be very calm to stop playing, leave everything behind, and be able to fall asleep quickly (and have a peaceful sleep). If you keep thinking about hands afterward, if your adrenaline gets too high from playing, you'll take longer to fall asleep and your sleep will be poor.

It all depends on your priorities, your physical condition and your work. When I was younger I could go a day or two without sleeping at all. But now I avoid unnecessary stress and try to take care of myself.

I know I'm going into the deepest degen tactics here but experienced meditators who do it regularly and for longer periods (at least an hour a day) can often function well below the usual amount of sleep. I've had 2 different teachers who at somepoint or currently only slept 3 or 4 hours a night because they meditated 2 or more hours per day.

Obviously too late for that now but if you want to play the late night games in the future that might be an option without sacrificing your wellbeing.

My dr says I should not eat acidic foods as citrus and tomato products cause me to cough. So a pizza alternative would be using alfredo sauce instead of red pasta. Of course popular toppings on an alfredo pizza would be pieces of chicken and bacon pieces. Scrumptious.
