How to control poker addiction?

Hey guys, i know that in our forum there are a lot of professionals and new players. Since i'm new I would like to know from professionals how they control poker addiction?

Hi again Biohazard858. You been posting a lot. Glad to reply to them. My friend, there is only one way to control any addiction. You know what the problem is, so walk away from it. They say in AA, "we keep doing the same things looking for different results" As for me, I'm just not going to let a game or anything else rule my life. Poker will always be here. Take some breaks, no matter if it's an hour, day, or week. You know what I say? If you say you can do something, then you can, but if you say you can't do something, then you sure can't. GL to you

I often take long breaks from poker, months at a time, but when I come back I go full tilt and burn out after a couple of months. This time when I came back I decided to limit myself to X number of tournaments a week to hopefully level it out and stick with it longer. You know what they say...too much of a good thing.

Exactly, i don't want the game to control my brain or my life. As a new one in this game i'm setting some rules ahead, so in the future i won't be caught in this kind of problems. Addiction is addiction till the moment you don't notice it.

For the moment i'm limiting myself to only when i have free time but since the summer is ahead and mostly i will be free i'm trying to set some new rules. Thnx 🙏

Hey,
I am no professional, but I know a lot about addiction.
Been smoking cigarettes for over 20 years straight, and got rid of it, all thanks to my woman!
Also poker can be pretty addictive, and what I can tell is the following:
- Be aware, all time long! You don't let yourself forget that you are getting the gambling addiction! And poker is not gambling (for me), so leave the gambling behind, and get serious with your game and start studying!
-Obviously, start studying
-Try to surround yourself with decent people
-Allow yourslef to fail, over and over and over again! You gotta fail so many times that you won't be able to remember most of the failures!

That's my advice right from personal experience!

Many poker professional don't control poker addiction, they become the game and the game becomes them. Prevention and self discipline is the only way to prevent something from becoming an addiction.

I understand that if a person says that he is addicted to poker, then he constantly loses.

If you are a full time professional player it makes no sense to talk about "addiction", because per definition poker is your job. So instead its a question of, how do you balanced your work life with your private life like hobbies, family etc. And really this is no different for poker players, than it is for other people, who are self-employed.

If you are playing poker for profit but as a side hustle, you obviously also need to balance it against your regular job. But again in this situation, you are not playing, because you are "addicted", you are playing because you want to try to win some money. So its like anything else really. If you spend 80 hours a week working 2-3 jobs, you will also have less time for family or friends. So whatever you choose to do, its a question of trying to live a balanced life.

Work addiction is real. I know a mortgage broker who works 90 hrs a week because she can't turn down business or money. She compromises her life for her addiction to money. Even though she makes 150k+ per year, she can't stop. She wants more money.

I would be worried about poker addiction only if I were losing a lot of money or I would not fulfill my other obligations because of poker, but I don't lose a lot of money on poker (I set low deposit limits) and my family and work always come first.

Well, we can surely say that this kind of addiction it's not harmful until you loose other important things in life. If it affects life for better it will no longer be addiction but profession.

if you schedule

I say that it's almost impossible what you have to do is program yourself and follow the schedule strictly, just so that poker addiction won't interfere with your personal life, I think this advice will be useful for other games as well.

If you are addicted, you should probably be looking to stop playing poker. The word addict means to me that your life is affected negatively overall by playing poker, so your efforts should be on cutting back and eventually stopping playing. As for HOW to do that, I have no idea, I guess you can ask to be banned from gambling institutions.

Professionals have no addiction

And that is why they are professionals. Through patience and discipline, players improve their skills and gain experience. It is your patience and discipline that is the guarantee that you will not develop an addiction. If you don't have the patience and discipline, then you'd better just find another hobby.
