How do you play the bubble so you don't get left out right before you get paid?

I think we've all experienced that situation: there are few players left to win prizes and the tension is beginning to be felt in every hand.

Some players become extremely conservative to secure the payout, while others take advantage of the fear of the table to steal blinds and accumulate chips.

Personally, I consider the bubble to be one of the most interesting phases of a tournament because a bad decision can leave you out after several hours of play, but playing too passively can also lead to prizes with a very short stack.

In my opinion, the key adapts to the size of our battery and the behavior of our rivals. Often players who are too concerned about winning prizes end up giving away their blinds, while those who know how to push at the right time get a great advantage for the next phase of the tournament.

💬 What's your favorite strategy for surviving and taking advantage of the bubble?

You can exit the game if the stack allows and wait for the bubble to burst)

Is it a sat? A bounty? A regular mtt?

Formats drastically change how you should treat the bubble.

I agree with regard to the size of the pile: if you are the dealer with QQ and someone is missing a card, sometimes it's better not to play the hand, as the big blind will probably equalize and could eliminate you even without a strong hand. However, if you have a big pile and the big blind is in a difficult situation, try to steal the blinds; they probably won't match, and if they do, you'll still keep your cards.

My bubble strategy depends heavily on my stack size. If I have a big stack, I try to apply pressure to medium stacks that are clearly trying to survive until the money. Many players become too tight on the bubble, which creates excellent opportunities to steal blinds and antes.

With a medium stack, I'm more selective. I don't want to risk my tournament life unnecessarily, but I also don't want to blind down waiting for the payout. I look for good spots to open and re-steal against aggressive players.

If I'm short-stacked, I focus on finding profitable push/fold opportunities rather than simply trying to sneak into the money. Min-cashing with one or two big blinds rarely leads to a meaningful result, so I'm willing to take calculated risks when the spot is right.

One mistake I see often is players becoming so focused on surviving the bubble that they give up too many chips. The goal isn't just to cash—it's to build a stack that can make a deep run. Surviving is important, but accumulating chips at the right moments is what sets up bigger scores later in the tournament.

In general, I try to pay close attention to who is playing scared and who understands bubble pressure. The players who are afraid to bust are usually the best targets for well-timed aggression. :D

I agree. In the bubble, the size of the pile completely changes the decision. With a short stack, survival has a lot of value and taking risks in a confusing situation, such as a hand with a missing card, can be a costly mistake even if you have a premium hand.
On the other hand, when you have a large battery, bubble pressure works in your favor. Stealing blind and before is usually very profitable because many players prefer to secure the payout rather than risk their tournament. Even so, you should choose your objectives well: attacking medium batteries is usually more effective than dealing with other large batteries that can return pressure.
The key adapts to the situation and remember that, in the bubble, sometimes winning the chips without showing the cards is worth more than winning a big pot.
