I usually prefer joining around the middle of the late registration period not too early, not at the very end so the stacks are still playable, but the field is already a bit filtered.

This. I'm playing a tourney now that had 5.5h (!) of late reg lmao. Stretched out the pay zone too much.

I don't like America Card Room tournaments just because of the very long late registration. When you start a tournament, by the end of late registration, after 5 hours, you just get tired of playing, and this is in a $1 tournament.

on the ACR and Redstar always same thing - long registration on some tourneys is 4-5hours
it is so boring... you have 200-300BBs stack and people just going crazy during late reg... i think answer for your question is to make Bigger prize pool

If people want to rebuy with 7.5BB and boost the prize pool, that's great when your ahead. Gonna create a big of a variance bump on most tables, give and take.
I wish 1-2 max rebuy tournies were still more popular, hell, even freezeouts have more meaning to each hand, in my humble opinion. Not that I don't fire away when I'm confident I can put together a stack, is what it is.
