For me, it always depends on the blinds' timing. If the tournament is hyper turbo, it's best to register from the start because the blinds progress so quickly that if you register late, you won't have much room to play the way you want. But I have friends who, when playing those kinds of tournaments, would register when registration was almost closing, make rebuys and add-ons, and still get good results. This is because they have a well-defined strategy, knowing when to register and how they're going to play (how aggressive they'll be). On the other hand, if the tournament is slower and registration is very long, I like to register when half or more than half of the registration period has passed. I do this to save some energy for the tournament. When tournaments are very long, I can get tired a bit faster, and I avoid feeling that kind of stagnation at a certain point in the tournament, which can be quite frustrating. This is what I pay the most attention to, but you also have to consider how you're going to approach the tournament: play aggressively, be more patient, are you prepared to play 3 hours of late registration plus whatever the tournament continues for?

I see a lot of players registering super late in MTTs, sometimes when the field is already half gone and stacks are like 20–30 BB.

Part of me feels like you miss a lot of good spots early when stacks are deep and people play badly. But at the same time, late reg can save a lot of time and you jump straight into more meaningful stages of the tournament.

Do you guys usually register right when a tournament starts, or do you prefer late reg? And do you think it actually affects ROI long term?

Late if tournament lasts longer than 4 hours. Some players will already be tired, the recreationals...then you take advantage of it. It is worth it and generally best decision in Mystery Bounties.

Late registration can be worth it, but it depends on the situation. When you enter late, you usually start with a shorter stack compared to players who registered from the beginning. This means you have less room to play small pots and must focus more on good spots to shove or re-raise.

However, late registration also has advantages. You skip the early levels where blinds are very small and progress is slow. Many players also bust during this phase, so joining later can save time while still giving you a chance to reach the money.

Late registration is most profitable when you still have around 20–40 big blinds. This stack size allows you to play proper poker instead of being forced into all-in situations immediately.
If you enter with less than 10–12 big blinds, the tournament becomes mostly a push-or-fold game, which increases variance and reduces your edge.
In general, late registration is fine, but avoid entering so late that you lose the ability to make strategic decisions.

I usually register late most of the time, and most of the time it works out, you have to take care of those who have the most chips and you can take advantage of those with the least chips and usually go all in to double their battery. salutes

I think late registration can be +EV in some fields, especially big online MTTs where the early levels last forever. If the structure is slow, entering with 30BB is still plenty playable and you avoid spending hours just waiting for the blinds to matter. But if it’s a softer field, I’d rather start from the beginning and try to chip up early against loose players. So for me it really depends on the structure and the player pool.

I think both approaches can be profitable, but they reward different skill sets.

Registering from the start gives you the advantage of playing deep-stacked poker, where many recreational players tend to make bigger mistakes. You have more room to maneuver, set traps, and build a stack gradually. Over the long run, strong post-flop players can probably generate a higher ROI by taking advantage of those early spots.

Late registration, on the other hand, is very time-efficient. You skip the slow early levels and jump straight into the stage where decisions matter more and the prize pool is already formed. The downside is that you’re often starting with 20–30 BB, which turns the game into a more push/fold and short-stack strategy environment. That reduces the edge that skilled deep-stack players might normally have.

I think ROI can definitely be affected depending on your strengths as a player. If you’re comfortable playing short stacks and ICM pressure, late reg can work well. But if you feel you have a strong post-flop edge against weaker players, starting from the beginning might be better long term.

Personally, I tend to mix both depending on the tournament and my schedule. If it’s a softer field or a bigger event, I prefer starting on time. If I’m multitabling or short on time, late registration can still be a good option.

I know that at Foxwoods it pays to be there from the start because during the first level the high hand wins their entry fee back.

It depends on your attitude. If you're an impatient person, registering for the early levels will be frustrating, and it would be better to register for the later levels, although you won't have much room to maneuver. I like to register for the early levels, especially if it's a tournament with elimination rewards.

Registering on time gives you the full stack relative to the blinds, so you can play more spots and apply pressure earlier. It also gives you more room to maneuver instead of being forced into push or fold situations.

Late registration can be useful if you prefer shorter stacks and higher variance. Some players like skipping the early levels and entering when the field is already reduced.

Both approaches can work. It mostly depends on your style and how comfortable you are playing deep versus short stacks.

In my opinion, it's to attract more players to the tournaments. The ACR is a master at this. I personally don't like it when it's excessive.

It depends what number of BBs I actually join in late - if it's 20 - 30bb I'm more than happy with it.

There are tourneys when you can still join at 5 - 6bb - that is a strong no.

On the other perspective when blinds interval is like 15m+ with 4 hours+ late reg - I'm in the end of late reg que, haha

Tournaments are a long grind, so it might be worth getting some sleep and skipping the early levels to rest and perform better in the later levels, where the stakes are higher. This is especially true if the buy-in is relatively low compared to other games you usually play.

It depends on the tournament structure. In a slow Deepstack, early is better for the post-flop edge. But in a Turbo or a Bounty Builder on GG, late regging can actually be profitable because you’re closer to the money and the bounties are bigger

I think late registration is advantageous for poker rooms because it increases the number of players in the tournament. ACRpoker, for example, has a very long late registration period, which can be somewhat frustrating for those who registered at the beginning of the tournament.

Late registration is long mainly to boost prize pools and field size.

More entries = bigger guarantees and more rake for the site.
It also gives players flexibility to join late if they miss the start.
Strategy-wise, late reg means more short stacks entering, which changes dynamics.
But very long late reg can increase variance and reduce skill edge early on.

I prefer starting from the beginning rather than late registration.
You get a full stack and more room to play postflop.
Early stages are softer, with more mistakes from weaker players.

Late reg often means joining short-stacked and facing push/fold spots quickly.

Late reg is fine for convenience, but starting early gives a better edge.

I prefer to register at the start, as it allows me to control the game better. Plus, if I'm eliminated on the bubble, I can still get my entry fee back. It gives me more security and flexibility to play without the pressure of high blinds.
