When playing MTTs, how do you decide whether to use a linear or polarized 3-bet range? Do you mainly adjust based on the opponent, or do stack depth, position and ICM change your approach?

GTO WIZARD free version answers these questions very well. By using it you will learn very quickly how to look at different stack sizes-seats etc.
As to player type you can do minor adjusting of player type by putting V in different seats and seeing how CO and BTN react to range changes. It is not perfect but a great way to create the base from which you can quickly adapt to most player types.
Just to clarify if you are looking at HJ vs BTN and you think the player is a Nit you would move Villain to UTG look at the BTN range and/or you could also move from BTN to CO to further refine range vs a Nit. Then in game apply that CO range to any nit in any seat as a base to start.
