Hi guys!

what is your strategy to finish in the top 10% for large tournaments?

I usually try to just play ABC poker, exploit when you can, GTO when you cant.

Play well. (shrug) Bring my A game, stick to my ranges, read the board well, watch my opponents' frequencies and exploit accordingly. Just abhorrently abuse position against fish. Adjust to the stack sizes. Widen up a bit with a larger stack and attack the smaller stacks. Bide my time with a smaller stack but don't play scared. Go for the kill heads-up unless Villain is also super aggro.

For large fields, my main goal early is simply to avoid unnecessary big pots and preserve my stack. As the field gets smaller, I start increasing the pressure, especially against shorter stacks, while keeping an eye on position and stack sizes.

The best strategy is not to dream too much and not to play too much. Otherwise, you might end up like a mouse endlessly chasing a piece of cheese—you already know how that story usually ends.

I've never followed the same strategy throughout a tournament because hands and opponents are different; I think it's best to know different tournament strategies and be able to apply them in appropriate situations.

I would say that the key is not to obsess about being in the top 10%. In big tournaments, you have to play well from the start, take advantage of good opportunities once your stack increases and, above all, avoid giving away chips in marginal situations.

You must also adapt to each stage: be more patient at the beginning, take advantage of the pressure near the bubble and risk more in the final stages when it really pays off. And you have to accept that, even if you play well, the variance means that you won't always be in the top 10%.
