What Is the Biggest Mistake New MTT Players Make?

I've noticed that many new tournament players focus too much on building a big stack early and often take unnecessary risks. In my opinion, one of the biggest mistakes is not adjusting to changing stack sizes and blind levels.

As the tournament progresses, I think patience becomes just as important as aggression. Picking the right spots, understanding push/fold situations, and avoiding marginal all-ins can make a huge difference in long-term results.

Another mistake I often see is playing the same way regardless of position. Position matters a lot in tournaments, especially when the blinds get bigger.

What do you think is the biggest mistake new MTT players make? Is it poor bankroll management, calling too wide, playing too passively, or something else? I'd love to hear your experiences and advice.

The biggest mistake is to play like this.

For me, one of the biggest mistakes new MTT players make is trying to win the tournament too early. I used to think that building a huge stack in the beginning was always a good thing, but sometimes you’re just taking unnecessary risks. I think patience is really important in tournaments. You don’t have to play every hand or fight for every pot. I’d rather fold a marginal hand and wait for a better opportunity than lose a big part of my stack just because I wanted to accumulate chips quickly. Another thing I’m still working on is adjusting to the different stages of the tournament. The way you play with a comfortable stack in the early stages shouldn’t necessarily be the same when the blinds get big and the pressure increases. For me, the biggest lesson is simple: you don’t need to win the tournament in the first hour. You just need to give yourself a chance to still be there when the important part begins
