I had a tournament recently where I folded hand after hand.

After about 30 hands, I started wondering if I was being too tight or simply being patient.

It made me realize that folding isn't just a strategy. It's a mental challenge.

The longer you sit without playing, the stronger the temptation becomes to convince yourself that a mediocre hand is "good enough."

Ironically, that's often when mistakes happen.

Sometimes, the hardest part of poker isn't making a hero call.

It's having the discipline to wait one more orbit.

So I'm curious...

What's the longest stretch you've gone without voluntarily playing a hand, and did your patience pay off, or did it eventually lead to frustration?

About 45 minutes is probably the longest I've gone without playing a hand due to being completely card dead.

Even when I finally picked up hands like AJo, there were already 3-bets and 4-bets before the action reached me, so I still had to fold.

Those situations can be frustrating, but staying disciplined is the key. Forcing action just because you've been folding for a long time often ends your tournament.

Instead, I focus on stack management, table dynamics, and waiting for a profitable spot.

In MTTs, sometimes the best decision is simply to keep folding until the right opportunity comes along. ♠️

I really don't know but I'd guess it would probably be somewhere around 15 hands playing live, which at a ten player table would be 1.5 times around the table.

In my opinion folding constantly and playing like a nit is not something bad, it is actually a strategy. I've seen many players playing very tightly before the "Bubble" and even after, for some it's playstyle for some it's strategy. Personally I've gone long enough to start playing standing up, which for me is very uncommon.

On the old PKR site I cashed (play money) 7th place in a 50 player SnG without seeing a single flop. I probably saw 1 or 2 checking BB not certain. Not sure how many hands that was. Of course way back then I was a terrible limpy nit.

hmm, I would say that about 30 hands, I'm not that patient, I would say that depending on the type of the tournament I prefer to try to steal chips in good positions, or even so with bad hands I go all in because I stress not seeing any good hands, but at the same time I'm trying to change that in my

when i was younger playing 5 card draw in a small card room in san diego i tested my discipline by folding every hand till i went to zero . it was a $20 buyin game with played with check and raise pre flop (no blinds ) . the ante was a quarter , so thats 80 hands .i highly recommend everyone try it once for a small amount .

The longest time I ever spent playing a single hand in a tournament was 30 minutes; I was getting desperate because I was running low on chips. The tournament ended with me making the money, though, because at the end of those 30 minutes I was dealt a premium hand—pocket Queens—and went all-in against an Ace-King; I doubled up, and thanks to that double-up, I made the money.

I dont know the exact record, but I have been more than 30 hands into a tournament multible times and still had my HUD showing VPIP 0. I have also ended up cashing in some of those spots, since all, it takes, is to win some kind of flip, and then you are back in the game. This is true even in a turbo SnG. So you just need to be patient and continue making the best decisions, even if that means folding yet again. Opening J4s from UTG is not suddenly a profitable play, just because you have been card dead.
