I find this question really interesting.

One of the things I don't think I saw mentioned in the thread is how PHYSICALLY grueling a long tournament series can be.

Mistakes happen during periods of MENTAL and PHYSICAL exhaustion at the poker table. Can you honestly say you've never been sitting in a live game and hit the point of just wanting to go home and not caring about the game anymore?

Is marathon running a sport? If you reach your 10,000 steps a day you'll complete a marathon and a half every week.

I don't know the answer, maybe the intensity with which a person pursues poker is a determining factor.

At the very least running nasty bluffs is good for your cardiovascular system... Gets the blood flowing

Poker is already considered a sport, but it is not recognized by so many people, but it has been confirmed that poker is a sport of skill and not luck.

I don't consider poker a sport. Poker is first and foremost a game of chance and I'm surprised by the idea or statement that poker is a sport.

Brazilian government recognizes chess, checkers, bridge, go and poker as sports. Who knows, perhaps the modality will be reviewed in other countries in the future.

For me, poker is definitely a sport. Poker is the same kind of sport as, for example, chess, and I'm almost certain that in the coming decades, poker will be officially recognised as a sport.

I hope that one day poker will be a sport and that it can take place in Olympic events, that would be great.

Poker has specific rules, like chess, which is a sport. In poker, the winner is the player who has the most knowledge and skills compared to other players. This means that the principle of "faster, higher, stronger" is fully implemented. And, of course, in order to improve your poker skills, you need to constantly and regularly train - for this, there are poker schools where you can raise your game level. These are the factors that are typical for any kind of sport. This means that poker should be recognized as a sport and restored to its rights as a sport.

I think that due to the amount of time required, many adaptations would have to be made to the game's structure itself.
I personally don't think it's that feasible, nor necessary.

I don't consider poker a sport. Poker is a card game, a game for money, a game of chance, poker cannot be a sport, and those who consider gambling to be a sport are just looking for excuses for themselves.

Anything can happen in the future, any game can become a sport, including poker, the main thing is that it unites people.

I don’t see poker - or chess - as a sport, but rather a mind game.

That's an interesting question. While poker is often discussed as a sport, it is not currently considered a sport in most of the world. It is generally categorized as a game of skill and luck, similar to casino games. However, there are arguments to consider poker as a sport, as it requires strategic thinking, mental agility, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Both chess and table tennis are recognized as sports and share some similarities with poker, such as requiring strategic thinking and mental concentration. However, chess and table tennis are more physically demanding than poker, which is primarily a mental game. Ultimately, whether or not poker is considered a sport is a matter of opinion and depends on how you define "sport."
I agree that poker sits in a unique space, blending elements of skill and chance. The strategic depth and psychological aspects definitely align it with other recognized sports like chess. It’s interesting that both chess and table tennis involve mental stamina and quick decision-making, which are core to poker as well.

I've heard it all now. Twenty or so years ago there was an attempt in the UK to have chess recognised as a sport. This was simply a funding wheeze. No idea what is behind this absurd suggestion.

Nope, it’s a game or pastime. I feel you need some form of physicality in order to be defined of as a sport.

There is still a lot of prejudice, nowadays poker is gaining more and more space on the world stage... I believe that when prejudice is much lower, we will have the opportunity to see poker overcome this limit.

I think poker is an intellectual sport, just like chess, for example. In my country, Ukraine, poker is considered a sport and it is recognised at the official level. We even have a structure called the Poker Federation. Maybe the time will come when poker will be recognised as a sport in most civilised countries. But poker as a sport and poker as a game for money are generally different things :)

It is already considered a sport in some countries.
If you sit and play, there's no physical activities- that can be considered as sport in bilion years...

BUT, if you doesn't have any kind of physical activities and you desperately want to have one - yes, poker can be sport... 😉

No, poker is a philosophy.:ROFLMAO:
Trying to define things is always a trap. Poker is whatever you want it to be.

The line between “game” and “sport” often blurs when it comes to activities like poker and chess. While poker lacks physical exertion, its competitive structure, professional circuits, and skill depth arguably qualify it as a mind sport.

For me, poker is entertainment, but poker can be considered a sport. The emotions that are experienced at poker tournaments are sometimes the same as at a football match.
