It depends. In MTT tournaments, I prefer 6-9 players. In Sit & Go tournaments and cash games, 4 players.

I guess it depends how fast I want to play. 6 max in cash games plays faster. If you have a good hand it's less likely that it will get cracked. So cash games I mostly prefer 6 max. In tournaments, though, you need to be more aggressive because the blinds come faster and you can't afford to wait for pocket aces. And if you just don't get dealt any good hands or at least playable hands you get blinded out very fast. And that is why for larger buy in tournaments I prefer to play 8 handed and a deep structure in order to have enough chips to play some poker.

8,9 - you can play more hands into the game because your stack will not be taken by BB, SB so often.

6-max is all about balance: action, reads, and constant adaptation.
Full ring (8-9 players) rewards patience and discipline : every decision matters a little more.
For me, the table size changes the entire rhythm of the game.

Tough answer…I don’t like to play at a short-handed table because the blinds come up more often, which forces me to play more hands than I might otherwise…on the other hand, the more players at the table, means there are more hands that may beat your hand.
