Knowing when to stop is just as strategic as knowing what to do with pocket kings. Most people focus on hand ranges and pot odds, but session management is where bankrolls are really protected (or destroyed).

For me, I think of it in three parts:
1. Emotional awareness
2. Pre-set limits
3. Energy and focus

Set a win/loss limit and quit as soon as you hit it. The table isn't going anywhere.

For me, stopping is mostly about mindset. I try to end the session when I feel my focus or emotional control starting to fade — win or lose. If I’m chasing losses or feeling “invincible” after a big win, that’s usually the signal to quit. The mental game is everything; knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing when to shove.

Put a limit to yourself, when you reach it you stop.

Lately I've been thinking about something that doesn't get talked about as much as technical strategy: the time to close the session.
I'm not just talking about inclination or defeats, but also about victories. Sometimes we keep playing for adrenaline, and what used to be a good session ends in disaster. How and when do they decide when it's time to end the day, in any case, a defeat or a victory?
Very godo question! hi! its a honors! welcomr from argentina! in my case, i stop when i play 8 hours aprox , some time more, its a routine of 8 hours in average, good day with winnings or bad day ( but good decisions in table) in anicase finish in 8 house aprox, because i structure my day for an exacly time aprox, exacly tournaments, and when i finish the last tournaments what i register in the day, ( aprox in the same time every day) i finish my day, with the next exception: if i am very tired for any reason i un-register the current prox tournaments, and finish when finish my current tournaments, but only for reason phisics, never tilt or bad feel, because al professional need work it and never, i repit, never, can are in tilt mode, i think peoplewhat are in tilt mode is not a good professional or is not a professional, maybe only 10% of pro players are in tilt mode sometimes, and the other 90% never, but this 10% is not a mental healthy, good thead and welcome from argentina! my language is spanish and i am working in english language speaking in english here, training here, without translate, ! for it my level for writte is in process to be strong! tyty!

you have to stop playing when you are losing a lot of money, and play another day when you are calmer.

🚨 Clear Signs to STOP NOW

SituationWhy stop?
Emotional tilt (anger, frustration, revenge)You play worse, make dumb calls, and lose more.
Mental fatigue (tired, sleepy, distracted)Reading errors, misclicks, and slow decisions.
Bankroll at risk (lost >5-10% of total)Protect your capital. Golden rule: never bust your bankroll.
Long session without profit (4+ hours no upswing)Variance is eating you alive. Stop and come back another day.
Playing above your usual levelYou’re at high-stakes tables due to ego or FOMO. Loss almost certain.

🛑 Practical Rules to Stop

  1. Set a STOP-LOSS before starting Ex: "If I lose 3 buy-ins, I’m out." → Follow it. No exceptions.
  2. Set a STOP-WIN Ex: "If I win 5 buy-ins, pocket 70% and leave." → Avoid giving it all back on a downswing.
  3. Rule of 3 consecutive bad sessions Lost 3 days in a row? 48-hour break. Study, sleep, return clear-headed.
  4. Fixed schedule Ex: "Play only until 11 PM." Sleep = performance. No sleep = tilt.

⚠️ When to QUIT FOR GOOD (or drastically reduce)

  • You need poker money to pay bills.
  • You’re lying to family/friends about how much you play or lose.
  • Poker is hurting work, health, or relationships.
  • You no longer study (hand reviews, solvers, etc.) → playing on autopilot.
Poker is a long-term skill game. Those who don’t manage bankroll, emotions, and time become donors.

I think measuring yourself and how you play make a big difference on when to stop, like scripting an A game and feeling the adrenaline is a GO while scripting a B game while feeling the pulse of enthusiasm may be to stop.

Great point. Lately I've actually been playing less, Sometimes we just force the issue and play just because of the sake of playing and because we're still have money in our account but it should be like this.
I've learned to walk away, admit and understand that today is not my day, everything is going against me, let me go for a walk and I'll come back later with a more clearer mind

The end of my gaming day comes late at night, when all the tournaments are over. I think you mean cash games. In that case, I would advise you to make specific goals for the day (for example, to earn at least $5). Once you've achieved your minimum goal, you can take a break or end your gaming day. ;)
