Bad habits

I'm finding that I carry over bad habits, or at least have the urge to. But, that's good in that it shows me where some of my weaknesses are psychologically.

I live in a rural town that doesn't do poker. We have a freeroll tourney every Thursday at the golf club. I think without this tourney a lot of the players wouldn't ever experience a live game, to which they get a hunger for the game and then chase bigger action which the major cities provide.

Seems most peeps here think its a great idea.

Ya I enjoy playing live. Just when it's free you do not get to see a lot of hands with the very slow paced play and not having a dealer. But cannot expect much for free poker. Ill think of it as a way to add some variety to my poker experiences with all types of players.

I think it depends on your goals. If nothing else I see it as an opportunity to to hone your skills against unpredictable play that will invariably show up in normal tourneys anyway. And eventually help your game overall. Just my opinion but if you can consistently get to the final table in a tourney like that - then in some ways you cracked the code for that particular game perhaps - just have to remember to shift gears when you play with "good/quality" players.

I believe that all types of games are usable and will add value to our game in the medium / long term, thus improving poker more and more, but I believe that when there is a financial value at stake, the moves become more technical And make learning more natural, adding even more knowledge.

It still a good way to learn and build up some skills. Most of them are just beginners or just starting to play poker without any risk of losing a single cent. If your too good for that then better skip the play and join a tournament. You cannot develop your skills if your just stick playing with them.

Yes I do play at a variety of places for money. I just wondered if adding this to my game can be beneficial due to the fact of playing with different types of players. I have good success there, but I just wasn't sure if that is even a good thing due to the quality of the opposition.

i think its ok for fun, the only thing you may learn at this pub game is what not to do. on the other hand free rolls like cc are good for learning most player are some what good you still find a few donks that will call your aces with 5-2 and suck out. thats far and few between.

Ya I play a variety of places. I just play in this to help expose me to all types of players you may run into in the field. Some of these individuals should stick to free poker that is for sure lol.

For a game in free poker it is difficult to motivate itself, but in such poker it is possible to show the skill more.

It is a good first step but you will not really learn how real-money poker works playing just free tables.

I believe this is the best way to learn. It is easier to play against a poker pro because you know why is he raising in early position, you know why he goes all-in preflop, you know when he is bluffing you and so on. Against donkeys you have no idea what and why they are doing it but the practice tells you when to "kill" the donk and who is he and become a better player. Leave the massacre in the beginning for the donkeys, they will eliminate each other. Then there will be only one of them left and you will bust him with every decent hand most of the time. At the end you will end up with the guys who went there to win and will have some good opponents. Good luck :)

I think playing for free live, even for gift cards or whatever would be a great way to start for someone who is wanting to learn how to play live instead of online. My biggest problem learning to play live was the chip counting and knowing bet sizing.Online you can look up and see the pot size on your computer screen.Live you have to keep up with what has been thrown into the pot, then make the correct bet size.

It is not a rule, but everything that is free people tend not to value. For those who are starting and want to take it seriously, I advise to pay anyway. In free tournaments people pay with bad hands and still get along well. If you really want to make a profit from poker, quit the freeroll and start spending on poker.

This seems to be very negative, but you really should be prepared to lose when you play freerolls. The best player in the world will have problems playing freerolls even if they play well, because luck is a more determining factor than in any other type of tournament. If you focus too much on winning, you'll just be more disappointed and frustrated when you end up getting paid for a worse hand and lose all your chips. The best formula for online freerolls is to play well and get lucky.

For beginners players freerolls can serve as a good start, but the experience and understanding of the game comes in the real money games.
