Learning poker the "old school" way...are you ready?

I would take with me Dan Harrington's book and some printed charts with the all-in ranges from short stack and for rejam and call to rejams from 20-30 blinds and I would try to learn them logically for each position.

I think I would actually take a book by Lousie L Hay, because as Harvey Specter from the suits series would say, "poker is not a card game, it's a people game." Based on this assumption, I would try to become a less explosive and complaining person, so I believe that my game would improve by around 60%, and poker has its secrets that no book can reveal.
I would no longer enjoy the landscape, drink lots of coconut water and get a nice tan.

Since we going old school Doyle Super System is the perfect choice.

Start the day off by going for a jog or more like a stroll on that beautiful beach in the picture. Write 10 times in sand (I will not try to bluff the calling station". After lunch and siesta read under shade of one of those trees.

I mean the books I would choose have already been named but I would pick Super system 2,
not for the holdem stuff but for all of the mix games which is still relevant and far more interesting!

My other choice would have been Theory of Poker since this book is required reading if you want to really learn the game.

I'm the kind of person who wants to know how things work so I would spend time going through odds of various games,
.... you don't really need anything to learn if you have a deck of cards and all the time in the world and can count lol

....Although I'm also a beach person so can't promise there wouldn't also be a lot of swimming, fishing and rum😏👍

When it comes to tournament strategy, Dan Harrington's series is the pinnacle for me and I would definitely take this with me.
They have everything you need for the basics and even more:

Well, the devil is in the details.

If there are no modern conveniences and I have to pack light, then the book that I choose will have to have other use cases as well.

I probably choose the thickest poker book ever written. Then I read as much is needed every day, and I tear out the read pages. I use some of them as toilet paper, and some to make a bonfire.

I love it!

I'd also use some of the pages to pad my nest (mattress) and wrap my fish (save for dinner cooked later over the bonfire).

Otherwise it cant be a fault to read the book 2 times in those weeks .

Well in such place I would like to concentrate on my problems in poker and on my poker problem in general. So for such educational trip I think that I need to re-read a book by Immanuel Kant, it actually was 3 books in one. I think that more than 20 years have passed since I read them...

I was going to say Michael Acevedo's book 'Modern Poker Theory' but considering the fact that I've had it on the shelf for over a year and am yet to even open it has me thinking it might be a poor choice.

Yup. The "old school" of studying the game I remember was railing the games & discussing the hands with friends. There's not a lot of books then on poker.

I choose “SUPER SYSTEM” by Doyle Brunson.

To study poker, I take with me a notebook and a pen, I experiment with the deck of cards and note the results of the equities.

I also try to estimate the best decisions to make in different post-flop situations.

If I had to bring a poker book it would be one that was filled with blank pages and then draw or write <3 I would absolutely get all I can out of my surroundings <3 I would be poker-free for a week and ready to crush when I got home.

I would take the book hand by hand from gus handson and try to understand and comprehend all his hands. I would ask myself how I would have played each hand. I would have the time to play through every single hand in my head.

What's not so nice, of course, is that it's a hotspot where you can come to rest and reflect and snorkel in the sea. I would always have the feeling that I was missing out on something. I'd rather be in a lonely mountain hut in the mountains where nobody disturbs me and I don't have the internet.

Doyle Brunson's Super System 2 for sure. Brunson is the master. I've seen him play a fair bit. I respect him and he's the kind of guy I'd love to study.

I'll bring an umbrella and a beach chair, obviously both lightweight, foldable and easily packed in my small carry on suitcase. My strategy - each day walk to the beach, set up my chair under my umbrella in a breezy location next to the other Cardschatters who have also made the trip to the island. I'll read each chapter and then join my forum colleagues in some rounds of poker to practise our skills. Read/practise, read/practise ... a time honoured learning strategy.

I'm the farthest thing in the world from a poker literature expert. I really have no idea what one book would be the best for learning and improving my game. That said, and even though I know it's considered outdated, I would choose Doyle's Super System. I have been interested in reading the book for years but never got around to it. I figure it probably had plenty of anecdotes from Doyle and his sense of humor hopefully bleed through.

probably like many the Harrington on holdem book but if I got a small duffel bag
and no one was searching it I would cram survival stuff in it. a flashlight, bug spray,
a pocket fisherman some worms, water, a lighter, a gun, some chocolate, and of course
a deck or two of cards.
then I would use the book as a pillow and play on the island trying to survive for a week.
may search the island for any lost tribes for a companion and someone to teach poker to.

It's a pretty good idea to disconnect from the mobile world and learn about poker with only books, decks of cards and personal belongings. I'd take it as a break and it's nice to actually do it. For this one week, I would take a book that explains everything important about poker in a concise and clear way, and I will focus on the basics. Learn poker in 30 days here in the forum is quite suitable. Of course, you will print it and you're done. Everything is very clear in it and it will take less than 30 days
