I started out with family and small group games in my hometown but I didn't get my first "real" lesson until I was in the service. After losing most of a paycheck or two (and when you're a private there isn't a whole lot to begin with ) I started turning it around and playing better. Been hooked ever since.

I learned to play at school but really learned to understand the aspects the game from a friend I met on pokerstars. He taught the basics and advanced poker theorums and I accredit all my success in the online and real world poker games to him.

I actually taught myself poker by reading According to Hoyle as a young teen (before most of you were born). I played for pennies with my friends. I've played home games for years with friends but have moved into the online world with its boom. I'm giving the game some serious study now and have great aspirations... Time will tell.

playing poker

Actually my husband taught me online. Since I started I did a LOT of watching to see how everyone else played. I joined a few forums and tried to learn all I couold. I know my game has improved a lot since first learning but am still waiting for that BIG win. The highest win I have ever had was about 300.00

I play Hold 'Em on a league on Mondays, and I learned my baseline skills there. From the league, I evolved to playing online. My fiance (t1riel) introduced me to some great poker sites, including royal vegas, poker stars and Cardschat. I really honed in on my skills at Poker Stars, and still practice there. After all, practice makes perfect!

I learned how to play poker on the old Intellivision game called Las Vegas Poker and blackjack. I was about 4 yrs old when I learned how to play. I started going to casinos at 19 and played about once a month. In the last 8 months or so I have gotten quite serious into Hold'em and we have monthly home games. I have been playing about 4 days a week online. I started online about a year ago, only playing with real money in the last 2 months.

Started playing poker with friends and on coffee breaks in school, education is important :)

I blame the TV for making me start playing Hold'em online.

I started playing poker when i was a kid growing up, with 4 older brothers around, i learned a few things from them. Started with the 7stud, and 5 card draw, now love texas holdem the best, and seems you never stop learning more about the game.

i played for fun

hi everyone,
i learnt to play poker online about two years ago, on a great site called play for fun lol, sadly it has now closed down, but it was a great way to start, the site was purely play money, with sit n go tournies, multis and regular games.
Everyone who joined started on 1k in chips and for the first few months i spent most days topping up never getting higher than 2k, my first poker aim was to place in the top ten in a multi, and to reach the million mark in play money, an impossible dream i thought, but i kept trying and my big poker moment was winning the sites big sunday multi which cost 50k in play money to register, just getting the buy in was hard work, but i did it and beat 300 runners, within two weeks i was a millionaire, lol.
this started the poker bug and i decided to try on a real money site, the first real money game i shook all the way through and was about first out, lol.
I now play for cash most days online and have a healthy account at bet fred usually placing the top ten on multis. and in january i made the big step of playing live at a casino, i was petrified, my new aim was to reach a final table live, I achieved that goal in feb, winning $800 dollars for first place in a $10 rebuy, and i didnt rebuy, lol.
I play three nights a week at the casino, but always stick to the low stakes $4 and $10 rebuys, my aim is to rebuy as little as possible, over the past six weeks i have made 10 final tables, placed 1st, 2nd and fifth, and missed the bubble a few times, but my winnings for this period is about $1,400 minus $200 on buy ins, so my hobby is becoming profitable, but for me the money is a brilliant bonus for doing something i love.
Poker has really changed my life

I'm afraid to say Nick, I'm still learning lol.

The first site I joined was Pacific and I'm still on there today (6 month ago). I started off playing for 'play' money and currently play a lot of sit n gos. I hope soon to progress to ring games though I think it maybe lower limits. Everyone must start somewhere.

Read a couple of books and am slowly learning to be a better player.

As with a lot of people over the past few years I started playing poker after watching Moneymaker win the World Series in 2003. After that I began to play hold em on some casino software that my computer came with. Playing a computer wasn't too much fun. I played with play money at party poker for a while and found that even though the commercials say it is a great way to learn the game, most of the players would play like morons. I signed up at Paradise to try the million dollar freeroll and liked what I saw. It turned out to be great site then I just started downloading other popular rooms. I've built a decent bankroll from some freeroll winnings and also make deposits from time to time. Since I just do this for the fun, not to make a living, I am a low limit player

playing with friends

i learned poker playing with friends for years, and gradually after trying many types of poker we, like most people settled on playing texas holdem, it seems to be the game that lets you know the most about what possible hands you could be up against.

I learned from the 5/10 play money tables at Pokerstars and from some buddies who taught me the game. I already knew the rankings of hands just needed some touch ups
