Live tournaments...do you prefer lower or higher buy ins?

For me it would be lower definitely...but I have satellited into bigger games a few times. That really eases the pressure as you don't have too much of your own cash on the line.

I used to play in a local pub here in the UK because our nearest Casino is about 70 miles away and we cannot have a decent drink then drive home afterwards
I have bought into some illegal games in pubs for as much as £25 but as some one said you get the bullies splashing cash around so I try to avoid them.
But my usual pub only plays for a £5 buy in keeping it legal and we get around 18 to 20 players each week so a half decent pot and it keeps it friendly.
Only since the lock down it has all stopped so online is the only way to feed my craving for a game and online I play for cents rather than dollars as I can play around 30 games a day with all my free time

Besides the 5% rule, how we gonna divide this? If my Bankroll alows me to pay $100 on buy-ins should I play 10 MTT of $10 or one of $100?

I truly believe a good answer depends on your ability to comit, treat each one as different and focus

I believe there are many factors, how much you can afford to lose, how skilled a player you are and how much excitement vs spend ability you have among other things.
Have a baseline bankroll strategy and then for tourneys, use the average rule. So play a lot smaller buyins and then a couple of bigger buy ins. That way you get the best of both worlds whilst maintaining a good bankroll management strategy.
For tournaments I’d average around 1% of my bankroll and for cash 5%.
Again if you do believe you are truly skilled as a poker player and you actually are then a more aggressive style of bankroll management won’t be a bad idea at all.
As poker is the variables are different for everyone and one strategy doesn’t always work for everyone when it comes to this matter. If you aren’t playing up to your skill level then you are definitely losing value in playing the lower staked games.

I prefer bigger buy ins. Despite the bank roll. If you Cash in in big tourney you win a lot. Smaller tourneys not really to make profit from playing. Stick to my game, follow the main rules always leads to good game.

I just love to play live poker so I play a lot different buy-ins. It's more ecxiting to play higher buy-ins but more comfortable to play lower ones.

The buy-in should be comparable to the amount of money that a person is ready to lose, since the game can develop in different ways. And even more important is the buy-in balance of the number of people and the gain!

It’s got to be low buy ins

When I look back over my online poker tournament cashes my best was a 1.10 buy where I won 250.00 and some change. I also had a second place finish when pokerstars had there 100k promotion I believe that took almost 6hrs to beat 13000 plus entrants. I was away from the game for about 6 years and since I have been back I’ve played zoom poker fairly steady but I’m starting to find my love for tournaments. I have to say that 888 poker is really starting to win my heart because they have so many free rolls and chances for the little guy with there step program and deposit bonuses. I need to relearn late tournament strategy and I’ve been playing to many hands. But I can see the groundwork for another final table. I think I will still play zoom at pokerstars but they really track your hands and the higher the blinds the more a guy like me has to play mid level hands but I would rather play 215 1dollar tourney than one Sunday million. But that’s me I know making the money is great anytime and the best part is because your freerolling lol . I’m wbtgog and if I see you on zoom poker take it easy on me lol thanx

Higher stakes games in general (both cash and tournaments) are MUCH easier. Except "MUCH easier" will only mean something if you:

A. Can afford it
B. Play your A-game

I dont have the opportunity to play live very often 2 to 4 times a year but have been playing higher buy in events. At this point in my life I want to experience something more when I play. Last year I played in my 1st WPT main event and played with the 14th ranked player in the world that day. While this event was most likely a 1 time event playing in the preliminary or smaller buy in wsop or circuit events. Last year I had a professional player at the WSOP apologist to sucking out on me. She really was more embarrassed I think that she mis-read me but was classy in how she acted. Its these experiences that I have enjoyed in poker.

I play the daily/nightly lower buy-ins sometimes when I'm on vacation and wanna kill a couple hours, but most of those tournaments are super turbos filled with crazy tourists, so its always a crapshoot.

When I travel to play poker at festivals and stuff, they're usually in the $300+ range where the quality and structure are much more reasonable.

When playing in tournaments, do you always look available? Or do you pick a higher level, hoping to weed out some of the players who play anything hoping to catch? At the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, the lowest buyin for tournaments is $50. On a weeknight, you may get anywhere from 50-70 players. Inevitably you get a lot of splashing around because a lot of players just think that “hey, it’s $50. So what if I lose?”. Do you look for tournaments that might be a little higher to buy in, but weed out those players?

I like buy-ins that fit in my bankroll. Even though I have job, I treat my "poker fund" as a bankroll instead of a budget. In general as long as the buy-in fits with my bankroll strategy then I look for a structure that I think is good for my play. I like to find structure points (S-Points) of like 70+ when possible, though I will play a structure that is less S-Points if I think I can do well.

Definitely like higher buy ins with smaller fields. I mean no matter the stakes there’s gonna be guys with deep pockets splashing but the smaller fields make making the money way easier.

The lower the entry to the tournament, the more bad players there will be. And they are just very good for those who want to make money and are ready to try, and not push any two preflop.
