I think Play Money can be fun sometimes, if they offer poker variations that are hard to find like 8-games or H.O.R.S.E.

But to sit and play NLH or PLO without some real money feels boring - when you can play really low stakes instead and feel a little more excitement.

To be honest, I don't understand why anyone would play poker for play money. It's kind of like going to the store to buy plastic apples or plastic food. It's like food, it looks good, but you can't eat it.

Real money is obviously not up for debate, with virtual money that is only for playing for a while is not acceptable to me because I don't see the logic in it, only for practice but it also loses the essence of the game which is about betting risking your money but that gives you a plus, with fictitious money you don't have any and you don't feel any emotion of having won something because you don't have anything in real life.

There's much difference between play money and real money games.
It's about the same like if you play a freeroll or a 100$ buyin MTT.

I would only do play money until you understand the basics, then make some money with freerolls and then play with the winnings of the freerolls.

Historically, all the goods in our life can be bought only by money. So I see no point in playing poker without any monetary interest, as I am wasting my time. And time for each person is very valuable to spend it on meaningless actions.

If you were playing with other players who really wanted to win, play money could be okay for some entertainment (for the competition of it). BUT on a public online poker site you won't see much of that.

I don't think much of playing with play money, because the players there don't play the same way as with real money. It's just wild hacking and poking with any hand preflop.

I think the freerolls are a good alternative. It's also wild in parts, but from a certain point in a tournament, it's good to play.

For those who enjoy playing for play money only all the more power too them keep on doing what you're doing.

But in my opinion playing for money activates levels of the game that can't be replicated with play chips. How people respond to winning and losing money can be built into how you play against a certain villain at your table.

Tilt is a disposition that can be heavily exploited, as is people's fear of money bubbles and busting vs laddering and ICM. In my opinion while you can try and play a strategically strong game, I think you'll end up in a situation where you're spending too much time on something where the other players aren't going to be 100% invested and won't be the best for overall long term growth.
