Sport has developed into such a wide category. To say that poker cannot be a sport because it is a game for money...is anybody questioning the contracts of the top baseball, football, basketball, soccer and hockey players? Are they only playing for the love of sport and donating the money to charity???? So, let's take the money aspect out of the argument. Does poker require skill? Yes. Stamina? Yes (if you have played in a major tournament for 15 hours in one day, you understand the stamina required). Is there luck involved? Yes...but show me any team sport where luck does NOT factor in...The Immaculate Reception by Franco Harris of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1972 is but one huge example of luck, because I'm sure that wasn't quarterback Terry Bradshaw's plan. Every day on the sports news highlights, you will see "Lucky" plays. If horse racing, where the horse does way more than the jockey, or Nascar and Formula One races, where the car and the mechanic are probably more important than the driver are considered sport, then why not poker?

Poker isn't a sport. Poker is only about money. If you eliminate the money aspect, there is no game.

It's not like baseball, soccer, chess, or even tic tac toe.

If poker is a sport, then so is trading stocks.

And baseball, football and chess are candy wrappers, not money...?

On November 16, 2024, poker was officially recognized as an intellectual sport by the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA). This decision places poker alongside disciplines such as chess and esports.

This recognition was made possible through years of effort by the World Poker Federation (WPF) and support from leading poker organizations. WPF President Igor Trafane noted that this is an important step in strengthening poker's status on the global stage.

The recognition of poker as an intellectual sport opens new opportunities for players, the industry, and businesses, providing legitimacy, career development, and new international competitions.

The next step will be the development of standard regulations and the creation of international structures for competitions.
