Yes if you can double your cash stack in each cash game you play, you will have a massive stack in no time.
Trying to do more than double in a 3 hour online session, that can be dangerous.

It depends on your experience and skill. If you are skilled enough, you can easily build up a bankroll in a few months by playing freerolls. For example, a bankroll of $100. And then you can use that $100 as your bankroll for cash games.

Cash games reward discipline, not hero plays.

Play solid ranges, value bet hard, and avoid big bluffs early on.
  • Start at stakes you can beat comfortably
  • Table select weak players = profit
  • Play deep, think long-term
  • Protect your bankroll, not your ego
  • Consistency beats heaters
Small edges, repeated well, build real bankrolls.

Yor question is not precise enough. Do you want to start from $0? Do you want to start from about $50. The baseline is missing.

If you want to start fron $0 the only way is playing freerolls until you have about $50.

Then you can start trying to get your bankroll up on NL2.

Better perhaps you build a roll to about $100 and start at NL 5.

The following Path may help:

How to Build a Bankroll From Zero (Beginner-Friendly)
1. Start at the Smallest Possible Stakes
If you’re starting from nothing, you shouldn’t be thinking about $1/$2 at all. That’s a destination, not a starting point.
Realistic starting points:
• Online: $0.01/$0.02 (“2NL”) or $0.02/$0.05 (“5NL”)
• Live: Low buy-in tournaments (€20–€50) or home games with €10–€20 buy-ins
Live $1/$2 is not a beginner bankroll-building environment. The swings are too big, and the buy-ins are too expensive.

2. Use “Seed Money” Instead of Trying to Grind From Literal Zero
Nobody builds a bankroll from €0 → €5,000 by grinding freerolls. That’s a fantasy.
What does work:
• Set aside a small amount of money you can afford to lose (e.g., €50–€200)
• Treat it as an investment in learning
• Use it to play the smallest stakes available
This is how almost every winning player actually started.

3. Play Games Where Beginners Have an Edge
If you’re new, you want to play where:
• People call too much
• People bluff too much
• People don’t understand bet sizing
• People don’t fold top pair
These games are gold mines for beginners who stick to simple fundamentals.
Examples:
• Soft online microstakes
• Home games with friends
• Small-stakes casino tournaments
• Low buy-in pub poker leagues
These games let you learn cheaply and win consistently.

4. Use a Simple, Beginner-Friendly Strategy
You don’t need solver knowledge to beat beginners. You need discipline.
Play:
• Strong hands preflop
• Aggressive value betting
• Very few bluffs
• Positionally aware poker
Avoid:
• Fancy plays
• Hero calls
• Big bluffs
• Playing too many hands
This style prints money at low stakes.

5. Grow the Bankroll in Stages
Here’s a realistic path:
Stage 1: €50–€200
Play:
• Online 2NL/5NL
• €20–€30 live tournaments
Goal: Learn fundamentals and avoid tilt.
Stage 2: €200–€800
Play:
• Online 10NL
• €50–€70 live tournaments
Goal: Build consistency and discipline.
Stage 3: €800–€2,000
Play:
• Online 25NL
• €100 live tournaments
Goal: Improve hand reading and exploitative play.
Stage 4: €2,000–€5,000
Play:
• Online 50NL
• Live €1/€2
Goal: Start taking shots at bigger games.
This is the path that actually works.

6. Don’t Move Up Until You’re Winning
Beginners often move up too fast because they’re bored or want to “play real poker.”
But bankroll building is about:
• Patience
• Discipline
• Long-term thinking
If you’re not beating 5NL, you won’t magically beat $1/$2.

7. Study Just Enough to Stay Ahead
You don’t need to become a theory wizard. But you do need to avoid beginner mistakes.
Study:
• Preflop ranges
• C-betting basics
• Value betting
• Bankroll management
• Tilt control
Even 15 minutes a day puts you ahead of most beginners.

The Real Secret: Treat Poker Like a Skill, Not a Gamble
Beginners who treat poker like entertainment stay broke.
Beginners who treat poker like a skill game build bankrolls.
You’re already thinking like the second type — that’s a great sign.

If you want, I can sketch out a step-by-step plan tailored to:
• Your current bankroll (even if it’s €0)
• Whether you play online or live
• Your experience level
• Your goals (fun, side income, serious grind)

Well, obviously not from 0 - you need something to start with. The rest depends if you are able to win.

Discipline is boring but it works.. Play stakes you can afford, quit when tilted, and don’t take random shots after one good session. Bankrolls die from ego, not bad beats

God dammit man you literally left nothing to say how rude :ROFLMAO:. All joking aside excellent post and we can pretty much end the thread there. OP take @Goggelheimer up his offer and pick his brain. You won't get a better offer.

Cheers!!!

Id say better start with freerolls they sngs , u think sngs are better than cash games . I don't have the answer how you'll win big in cash games , but for sure it's not easy . A lot of time and study is needed to succeed , personally I lack these two nowadays .

Yo, building a roll is a grind but totally doable.

Bankroll: Keep 40-50 buy-ins for your main stake. Never play with rent money, keep it "sacred."
Crush the Rake: Micro-stakes rake is a trap. Take aggressive shots at the next level with 20-30 BIs.
Stop-Loss: If you take a shot and drop 5-7 buy-ins, move back down immediately. No ego, just business.
Volume: Variance is a beast. Focus on solid +EV decisions, not your daily cashier balance.
Move Down Early: If you lose a chunk of your roll, drop stakes to preserve capital and rebuild confidence.
Study: If you aren't improving away from the table, you're just donating.

Start at low stakes, manage your bankroll strictly (at least 20–30 buy-ins), focus on solid fundamentals, and move up only when you’re consistently winning.

Building a bankroll through cash games is all about discipline and volume rather than hunting for one big score. At the micro-stakes, the key is to play a fundamentally sound, 'ABC' poker style, tightening your pre-flop ranges and betting big for value when you actually have it

Bankroll in cash games grows through discipline and consistent play.
It is important to play within your bankroll and not sit at stakes that are too high. It is better to choose soft tables where opponents make more mistakes.
Avoiding tilt is very important — after losses, do not try to quickly win the money back.
After sessions, it is useful to review hands and learn from mistakes.
And most importantly, grow gradually. In cash games, money is made not in a single session, but through consistent play over the long run.
