Live Grind: How to Fall Asleep at the Table (Without Getting Caught)

This is, imo, the most difficult aspect of live poker. The amount of time that it takes to lose to bad luck can make it feel like eternal run bad. I believe you played your hands right and couldn't have done anything more. I will say that in one hand you express your loosey-goosey image and then in another hand you convince yourself that villain will fold. I'm not even sure if he had you on that image, but it's something worth noting.

Feel better, run better!

I know those feelings all too well. Not much to do I guess.

AJ nh

A10 I don't play live so I don't know if people are always checking back Jx there but I'm not really sure if a low stakes live player is really going to be folding 9x, you might need to make it bigger if you think you really can get a fold

A5 I'm not a fan of c betting this board into this many players, personally I just give up. On the turn given we are hu and he mostly has 1 pair I actually quite like barreling with the intention of blowing him off of most rivers, the rivers a good bet, he just made a shitty call.

KK standard I guess maybe I might bet the flop a little more like ~$90 to charge draws a little more especially given our image. But your sizing still gets us a shove on the turn so the points probably moot.

AJ: Perfect.

A10: Preflop and flop are good. I'm not sure I like the turn bet, as I don't really expect to take down the pot right there. Not saying it's bad or anything because I completely understand the meaningful check thing, but 1/2 players are generally passive, which means they're not really gonna bet 9x often but will call a bet frequently. I give up on the river tbh. I get that the river bricks all draws, but I don't know if 9x is ever folding unless you really bomb it. I would prefer to fire non-spade high card rivers and check everything else.

A5: I might fold pre, but if you've got a good handle on the table it's fine. I don't like the cbet in a 4-way pot, especially after getting called in the previous hand. I can't really expect any mid/medium pairs, top pairs, or draws to fold. I prefer to give up on the turn. It's not a threatening card to any pair really, and if someone thought they were ahead on the flop they aren't going to fold now. River sort of plays itself after the turn barrel, but again, I really don't like firing the turn here.

KK: Just gross. 🙁

As for your feelings post game - your feelings aren't unusual. I've left the casino in that exact emotional state COUNTLESS times. I'm convinced that we need to feel this way if we want to improve mentally and strategically. Just like a huge mistake or downswing motivates us to get better at poker, emotional swings like this drive us to become stronger mentally.

I do believe, however, that you should have left after the A5 hand. You said it yourself - you were rattled and shaken up. The table and your image may have been perfect, but it's dangerous to play when you are practically one bad hand away from a full blown steam. It's better to shake it off, go home, and try again another time.

Hang in there, Scourrge. You know you can crush 1/2. Just keep making good decisions and it'll pay off. And as always, text me if you wanna talk about anything on or off the table.

I feel like were spirit animals atm. Both of us on terrible runs, hang in there bud, you CAN win and you know it.

You guys are all awesome as ****. Seriously.

I wasn't feeling as bad about it at this point, but I wanted to try to accurately represent my emotions from that weekend session. And I guess it worked, because I felt a bit frustrated just thinking back on it.

That session was the first time I've felt really, really steamed in quite a while - and that's including Foxwoods and Vegas combined. There's some accumulated emotion in there obviously, but in a way, the act of getting steamed kind of shook me up too? Like the fact that I got pissed kind of frustrated me, which I think compounded everything.

As for being able to win, I know that I can. It's pretty unbelievable, but the truth is I just can't put enough volume in live to even say my "profit rate" is remotely close to my true win-rate. So I know I can't get hung up on this run I'm having.

But I think what hurts the worst isn't the losing. Not on its own anyway. Hell, I started out live poker losing money hand over fist. No, what's worse is WINNING first. My bankroll was at an all-time peak, and I was playing and holding my own at a new limit - my first limit jump up in months and months. Then gradually and suddenly it's like I fell off a cliff and practically all I've done since then is lose.

I know I'm miles ahead of the people I'm playing with, and I know it will turn around. But I also want to take this opportunity to reflect on my mental game and tactical game again. I can improve both, undoubtedly.

Ironically, I felt that that session showed some of my strongest performances in both categories. I may have run below expectation given how some of my big hands went (and how I didn't get action when I made good value hands), but I created a LOT of +EV spots that a ton of weaker players wouldn't have been able to begin thinking about, let alone executing. And I ran very subpar the entire night but didn't get too crazy. I felt that even though some of my bluffs were picked off, I mostly picked pretty good spots.

@Sand: Thanks, as always, for helping keep me sane. I know the emotions aren't unnatural or anything. I find it frustrating that I still experience them in such extremes, but I also understand that having that experience is how I grow and learn to move forward consistently.

@deuces: If that's so, then I'm honored. 🙂 You've done so much to help me grow as a player, and sharing mental game struggles with you has always made me feel like what I was going through wasn't just okay, but normal. You watched me flail through the micros and get hit hard at almost every turn. One thing I'll always appreciate is that you took the time to go through my old mental game thread. Looking back, it's not like anything that exciting went on in there, so it was pretty sick to have better players who'd been around that block sending run good my way.

Thanks again to everyone. Like I said, I wrote this out to try to feel better about it, but at first it just brought back some challenging emotions. I was writing for myself, not for you guys, and what did you do? Spoiled me rotten. Thanks for reminding me that not all aspects of poker suck - and that you guys are pretty much the best part.

'Til next time.

Late-subscribing, and look forward to catching up on your adventures, Matt.

Read your @Everyone thoughts on the new job\benefits and totally agree, especially the part about taking advantage of the 401k as early as possible.

Read through all the recent posts, interesting discussion about going pro. Totally agree with you that having a decent a job and prospects makes the decision an easy one, and it's not liek you have to stop playing or anything 🙂

Your recent run sounds pretty rough man but keep your head up, imo you are a very good, thinking player and it will certainly come back to you + more in the medium to long term. Taking a short break to get over the accumulated emotion/tilt and get things in perspective certainly seems to have helped me.

I think we need to do more poker chat, iv had a rough few days of poker aswell but nothing near your lefwl

Yo yo yo. Played the pokerz live last week. Was up 3 BIs then busted it all to a guy who couldn't lose lol. How's life been treating you?

Blobbooooooo. Well, life's been okay, poker's been a bitch of a mistress lately. If you haven't skimmed thread, cliffs are that I took trips to Foxwoods and Vegas, and bricked everything. Then went on cash downswing. So, y'know. Standard.

How've you been?!

Hmm... Thought we still had the older one open - might not get traffic. I've been on and off as of late. Hopefully run into you at some point and I can add you back in. Or just talk to one of the other CC regs and they'd obv add you 🙂

I play quite a lot of chess myself, in fact I'm thinking about taking a trip back to New Zealand in January to play in the New ZEALAND chess championship, assuming I have money by then.

Correspondence chess I always have 10-20 games going. Live (still online) here and there.

Where do you play correspondence? I play correspondence on gameknot, my rating is over 2000 atm so I'm doing pretty well

Chess grind ftw imo. Definitely hit me up if you start playing again though blob. I love sweating duggs, but deep tables and tourneys confuse the shit out of me - especially when they are happening concurrently. Would be good to have someone playing game types I get at levels I vaguely understand 🙂

Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

Not exactly. I was on the fence for quite a while. And it's a relatively small amount, so I'm okay with it.

More vids incoming, perhaps 🙂
