I sit down strike up a conversation ,try to observe everything and just play,try to relax and take it all-in.I never change how I approach playing.When I sit down in my mind my money is already gone and my chips are just part of a game,I never ever think or worry if I lose because my mentality its just a game like going golfing cost X amount to play and if you lose a golf ball,oh well, I treat poker with the same mentality

As to the play, you never know with poker, I wouldn't fold if I got dealt a prime hand right away, but in general, I'd play a little tight till I see what's going on at the table.
Depends on whether I know most the table or don't. If I know most the table and how they play it's pretty simple jump in and hit the ground running zero need to feel anything out.
Now if it's complete table of mostly unknowns......I sit down, STFU and pay attention to every players actions, how they make their actions, expressions and how they talk. I also play a simple TAG strategy till I have decent baseline on everyone's behavior/expressions and what their actions have told me about them so far. During this period I'll set up mine with pocket 9's or lower if it's cheap enough.....anything above pocket 9's is a 3 bet. After about the first hour or once feel I have good baseline of everyone it's then game on and I can start raising with suited connectors and actually making some fun fancy plays when given the chances and put in the positions to make them.
I also NEVER EVER look at my hand till it's my action when I first get cards. I'm always looking at everyone else and noting their reactions and expressions when looking at their cards. Looking at your own cards first just isn't smart and a huge mistake the vats majority still make even in 2026. Why? Because you'll miss the other players first reactions to seeing their cards and their first reactions are often their most honest ones.

When I play cash games, in my case that means I have limited time to play. It’s usually no more than an hour. So I don’t have time for any prior preparation or observing the game. I just sit down at any table and play as usual.nabmom said:

I don't play cash as often but do play a few times per year. I usually buy in for 100BB and will play tight for the 1st orbit or 2 before opening up my game. I like to get a read of the table. Also looking to see if it is a table i want to play at. A few years back i was at a table that was so tight nobody was playing hands. I could not wait to get away from them. Think it was folded to the BB 4 time in 7 hands, LOL
If you're playing in a brick + mortar casino where I live you'd better play tight every orbit ! The rakes are ridiculous , 4, 5 ,6 bucks dropped per hand . You cant beat that long term by splashing around . I will buy in for the minimum so i can shove 1010+, aqs +, and ako when I suspect weakness or wide ranges , Most games you will get action more than you should . And if you wind up at a table like Luvepoker mentions , just get up and leave .
You should always play tighter in a cash game when you first sit down. Live cash games are standardly loose and passive which means in EP we have to play tight. In EP we are already disadvantaged by position then being called multiway drops our expected EV from any handnabmom said:
Example we open ATo UTG1 HJ calls with 55 we have 46% equity- if BTN calls A2s our equity drops to 32% which is only ok in a 3 way pot but OOP we cannot realize all that equity. We then have to subtract some % of our EV because we cannot get to show down easily. Often in live games we will fold 1/3 of our hands before river OOP. Subtract 1/3 of our equity and the hand only has 22% equity.
The frequency in which we will win big pots OOP when we do not know how the other players play is low -however we could lose many medium pots negating our big pot wins when we get them.
Opening ATs EP has a lot more value than just the EV difference with ATo. A solver will state that you can win even 5x as much value from the suited hand vs unsuited because you over flush players for bigger pots over 100 hands.
So yes tighten up EP by playing the suited versions of your bottom opening range until you know the table well. The suited version is 4 combos vs unsuited 12 combos that is all the tightening you have to do.
You may wish to play tighter in all positions for a few orbits as well. When in the SB vs players you do not know be a nit and 3 bet or fold!

In a live casino you may be able to watch the action for a bit to decide whether to take a seat , and at what table .otherwisw , my poker maxim is ' rule #1 :if you cant play good play tight . rule #2 , if you cant play good or tight , drink whiskey and get frisky ' .

At first, your own playing style matters little, whether tighter or looser, after all, without knowing the style of the others you can lose many chips stolen by loose players and bluffs.

Since I'm still relatively new to cash games, I've been thinking about this a lot and trying to develop a consistent approach.
What I've settled on for now is starting tight whenever I sit at a new table. The first orbit or two I'm mostly just observing — who's raising a lot, who's limping everything, who seems to be the recreational player, who looks like a regular. I'm not trying to get involved in marginal spots before I have at least a basic read on the table dynamic.
The reasoning is simple: in a new table, I have zero information and everyone else might have history with each other. Playing tight early costs me very little in terms of missed opportunities, but it protects me from making expensive mistakes against opponents I don't understand yet.
Once I've spotted the weaker players and identified the regulars, I start adjusting. I'll open up my range against the recreational players and tighten up against the regs until I have more reads on their tendencies.
I'll be honest though — I'm still learning how to do this efficiently. Sometimes I feel like I spend too long being passive and miss good spots early on. Finding the right balance between gathering information and actually playing is something I'm still working on.
