Yes you technically only play against the dealer however the player in the last (anchor) position can be the difference between the dealer busting or winning. If the last player is using Basic Strategy. then all is good. however if the last player is the type who hits 14 against a dealer low card then that is to the dealer advantage. example. you are in last place dealer has a 6 up. you have 14 you hit and get a face card and bust dealer has 16 next card a 3 dealer wins table loses and would have been the reverse had you sat on 14...Bad anchor

You're right — basic strategy at the anchor position matters. We have a free blackjack trainer that grades every play and bet against the count, plus basic strategy charts, so you can practice getting those decisions right. It's all free play money on a site I run, lifesagambol.com.
 
Well, all hands departing from basic strategy affect the overall outcome,
but when the dealer has a 4,5,6 and you stick on a low hand, waiting for the dealer to
hit the 10 and bust, the anchor definitely affects the outcome; it either takes the dealer 10
or sometimes can prevent him from a high hand if hiding a nice card underneath.
