las vegas has been a seedy lawless getaway 'run by gamblers , grifters and shadowy partners in tailored suits' since the Paiutes were run off their desert oasis in the 1850s by traders and prospectors .

What is your accurate source beyond Hollywood movies, that the mob has any control of Las Vegas casinos?

Vegas is run by wall street, but there are some casinos in asia that are still run by the organized crime.

You might be able to find a small or tribal casino in the usa that is under the influence of organized crime but this is very rare.

People who have money can afford quite a lot. For example, they can hire people who have no problems with the law to organize and run a business, including gambling.

Wall Street may run Las Vegas now , but I would imagine their executives are quite ruthless as well . Big money = big personalities .

Stereotype, like casinos and jazz. I think there's much more mafia in politics than in the gambling business.

Whereever big money is, there you will find all sorts of criminals no matter how they are called (Mafia, Mob and all other sorts of two faced organizations).

If gambling is prohibited, then it is most likely to operate in the shadows, underground. Such a business that operates underground cannot exist without the supervision of the appropriate people. It can be the mafia or the police, or the mafia and the police at the same time.

I guess the answer to your question is with a lot of money? That's probably how they get those licenses plus by fulfilling certain requirements.

This is a historical relationship. Symbiosis.
Since the gambling business was often illegal. its activities were controlled by various criminal groups. Nowadays, the issue of licensing is not so important, if you have money you will find how to get the necessary permission.

that is true but youd think that the gov would want everything regulated but idk

I think historically organized crime definitely had connections to some casinos, but today the licensing process is much stricter in most places. That doesn’t mean corruption can’t happen, but I wouldn’t assume every questionable ownership connection means the mob is involved.

I think corruption definitely played a role historically, especially when gambling was illegal. The mob also had money and connections to enter legitimate businesses. Licensing rules today make that much harder, though.
