when is it actually normal to tip the dealer?? im so confused

Lots of good advice here already. I never thought of it as a set amount - if I'm consistently winning, I'll tip every so often. How much depends on size of pot or win. I have also played a hand for the dealer (blackjack) - but I always feel bad when it loses. But I've never come across a dealer who didn't thank me. I think if they were as you described, I just wouldn't bother.
Granted I've been playing in casinos for around 45 years, but I cannot remember a dealer ever not saying thank you for the tip.

At the stakes I play anything more than a dollar after winning a poker pot would affect my stack size significantly .Where I live that's how employees make most of their income , so I usually make at least a minimum contribution .
