I have already been criticized a lot for playing poker, especially in mid-2012, when I got to know the game and decided that I would delve deeper, because I saw a potential to live from it (like many amateur players who have their first contact with the game). My mother hated that I devoted hours of my life to a game of cards. Today is totally different, because poker has become one of my most profitable incomes and that made her see with different eyes. I think everything we do that comes out of people's formality is questioned until you prove otherwise is this...

Everyone treats differently, because we are different and no one has the right to choose your hobby, except for yourself, if it does not harm. Some see poker as an opportunity, others see it as an addiction, but it all depends on you.

Not really sure, when I was married with kids at home, I was always prepared to get up & walk away from the game if family needs came up. Single now & no kids at home, but my attitude remains the same if daughters or grandchildren, or other family members require my attention. As far as any family members attitude to poker or gambling, if they don't approve they probably shouldn't play, problem solved.

My friends and my family are neutral about my hobby. I play poker in the evenings, after work and for me it is the best rest and entertainment.

I find that friends and relatives tend to be a bit hesitant when they find out I’ve started playing poker regularly. For reference, I have a history of not being great with money (not specifically gambling related but just used to spend frivolously).

However, once I explain the concept of freerolls and so forth, they tend to be a little more receptive. The best way a friend put it was “oh, so you basically play for fun but with the added benefit of potentially winning enough to buy a couple of pints to celebrate”, which is pretty accurate

It depends of the level of poker played.
For an occasional or recreative player, the attitude is generally favorable. The same is for a good pro.
For a mid level player the attitude is generally neutral - negative, but can be improved through discussing, involving them, showing the benefits (not necessarily financial)

Most important is, however, how you feel about you game!

i personally get criticized alot often because my family are just like the old og families they dont believe in easy money or stuff like that and they dont understand poker too....

We must accept that ignorance of the game makes many of our friends and relatives speak badly of poker, but we are aware that it is a healthy and profitable sport for anyone who studies and works hard on his game to always improve himself.

Mixed response

My boyfriend is cool with it. I asked him if he thought I could be good enough to make money at it and his response was not with all the other things you have going on. So I feel like he gets it. For now, I just want to keep learning and not take it too seriously.

Other friends and family have warnings all the time. “Don’t get addicted.” “Don’t you think you are a little obsessed?” “You and your poker stuff”. These are the same people many times that spend hours and hours and hundreds or even thousands of dollars on quilting, playing Cornhole, sailing or many other hobbies. So I always consider the source.

For me, I just try not to have too many hobbies at once. Enjoy one until it no longer suits me or I have learned all I can. I see poker being a hobby for years. There is so much to learn. I get excited each time I play!

My immediate family is fully supportive of both myself and my husband playing poker. Some of the extended family and friends know and those that do also support or are indifferent towards poker.
