Difference between a donkey and a fish

Is there one?

in short, not really. donkeys are fish. a fish is a donkey.

I've always felt there was a slight connotation of fish being more apt to chase down that runner runner flush or straight while a donkey tends to just raise with any two suited or paint and has no regard for things like table image or position.

That sounds a little bit like what I suspected. That a fish is sort of a newbie. Not very experienced and apt to make predictable mistakes. That a donkey is a sort of idiot...clueless and not too concerned about it.

Does it matter. Oh and all fish are different, they all make different mistakes. Your job is to figure out which leaks and exploit them.

I figure a "fish" is someone newer to the game and still makes beginner mistakes, easy to play against. A "donkey" is somebody who knows better but plays like an ass anyways.

To me a fish will call all sorts of hands pf and will even call bottom pair on the flop hoping to hit trips or pair up, will fold if he feels hes to weak i.e lots of raising in the hand and hes missed

A donkey is a bit more reserved still fishy but tricky play can't be pulled off i.e good luck pushing them off their A-rag etc, thinks the cards infront of him no matter the kicker, are good i.e if you have 10s and flop comes j-8-2 and he has j-5 yeah good luck trying to push him off that not to mention you raised massive pf aswell.

No, it doesn't matter. Just curious. Find myself, at times, while taking notes wanting to jot down the applicable term and thinking to myself that I'm not sure which is which.

At other times, when I've done something stupid, I wonder if my opponents perceive me as a fish or a donk.

None of it matters. Just a curiosity.

I have no idea if this is actually true or not but when I think of a fish, I think of a weak passive player who just calls and folds a lot and when I see someone overplaying hands and/or making dumb calls and bluffs, i think of them as a donk. Thats just me.

No need for writing a term, just write down exactly what they did, how they played and what they showed down.

I constantly get called a donk, and only once or twice a day a fish.
So I guess I come across as a donkfishdonk

I agree...

donk=bad player who just keeps sucking even thought they keep losing money
fish=new/passive/calling station type player, who might learn how to play eventually

This is just my opinion.
Fish = bad player who's just as bad as a player who's new to the game
Donkey = just a horrible bad player who knows the game

Fishes can turn into sharks if they eat and grow
I'm in that process right now. I'm a fish hoping to turn into a shark someday.

A fish is a inexperienced novice player, almost playing there hands face up.

A donkey is a more knowlegable player, playing hands incorrectly with regards to strengths, odds, position etc.

Quick comment though, a lot of people called donks at lower levels are in fact better players exploiting the ABC poker played by their opponents.

The big difference between them is that generaly fish lose and sometimes donkeys win.
In the long-term better to be donkeys. LOL.

Couldn't agree more. Just make sure upon spotting them on your table, to sit to the immediate left of him/her.
